Chapter 11: The Daughter I Almost Lost
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not Daniel.
Not Vanessa.
Not the traffic outside.
Nothing.
Just those two words.
*Father: Unknown.*
I stared at the page.
My hands shook.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Then louder.
“No.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
I moved away.
“Don’t.””
Her face broke.
“I never wanted you to see it like this.””
I looked at her.
“How else was I supposed to see it?””
She had no answer.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I know how this looks.””
I laughed bitterly.
“How it looks?””
I held up the paper.
“My daughter’s entire identity was questioned.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
I walked back inside.
Lily and Ethan were standing at the bottom of the stairs.
They had heard everything.
My heart sank.
“Lily…”
She looked at me.
Her eyes were full of fear.
“Is it true?””
I froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“That I’m not your daughter?””
The pain in her voice destroyed me.
I dropped the paper.
Walked toward her.
And hugged her.
“You listen to me.””
She cried against my shoulder.
“You are my daughter.””
“But the paper—”
“I don’t care about the paper.””
I held her face.
“I was there when you took your first steps.””
Her tears continued.
“I taught you how to ride a bike.””
She nodded.
“I stayed awake every night when you were sick.””
Her lips trembled.
“I know.””
“And I loved you before I ever knew your blood type.””
She broke down.
“I’m scared.””
I hugged her again.
“I know.””
Behind us, Ethan watched silently.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“You knew this could hurt her.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“And you still brought it here?””
Daniel had no response.
That was when I understood something.
Everyone around Lily had been making choices.
Everyone except Lily.
She was the one person who never deserved any of this.
Later that evening, after Lily went upstairs, I sat with Ethan in the kitchen.
He looked exhausted.
“Dad.””
“Yeah?””
“Do you think Mom was telling the truth about anything?””
I stared at the table.
“I don’t know.””
That was the hardest sentence I had ever said.
Because my children needed certainty.
And I didn’t have it.
Then Ethan pulled something from his pocket.
A small flash drive.
“What is that?””
He placed it on the table.
“I found it in Mom’s office.””
My eyes narrowed.
“When?””
“Before everything happened.””
“Why didn’t you show me?””
He looked down.
“Because I was afraid there would be something worse.””
I plugged it into my laptop.
There was one video file.
No title.
No date.
I pressed play.
The video showed Vanessa’s mother sitting in a restaurant.
Across from her was someone else.
Someone I recognized.
My heart stopped.
My father’s old lawyer.
The man who handled the estate.
Vanessa’s mother spoke first.
“Once Marcus marries Vanessa, everything becomes easier.””
The lawyer nodded.
“And the child?””
Vanessa’s mother smiled.
“Lily is the key.””
I felt sick.
The video continued.
“She is the reason Marcus will never let go.””
The lawyer asked:
“What if the father finds out?””
Vanessa’s mother laughed.
“He won’t.””
The video ended.
I sat there frozen.
Ethan looked at me.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I finally understood.
Lily wasn’t a target because of money.
She was a target because she was the one thing they could use to break me.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Marcus, you need to stop searching.””
I stood.
“Who is this?””
The woman laughed softly.
“You already know.””
My blood went cold.
Vanessa’s mother.
“I know you found the files.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Where is Lily’s real birth record?””
Silence.
Then she said:
“You don’t want to know.””
“Why?””
Her voice became colder.
“Because when you find out who Lily’s biological father is, your entire family will fall apart.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Ethan looked worried.
“Who was that?””
I slowly lowered it.
May you like
Then I said:
“Your grandmother.””
