Chapter 13: The Truth Daniel Hid

Daniel stood in the hospital doorway.

Silent.

Still.

And that silence answered a question I had spent years never thinking to ask.

My brother.

My best friend.

The man who held my daughter when she was a baby.

Could he really be the person standing behind all of this?

I stared at him.

“Answer me.””

Daniel looked away.

The doctor slowly stepped back, sensing something he shouldn’t be part of.

“Marcus…”

I raised my hand.

“No.””

My eyes never left Daniel.

“I want him to answer.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Not denial.

Not anger.

Just disbelief.

“You didn’t know how to tell me?””

He looked at me.

“I was scared.””

I laughed quietly.

Everyone was always scared.

Vanessa.

Her mother.

Daniel.

Everyone had an excuse.

But nobody thought about Lily.

“You let me raise a child without knowing the truth.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I loved her.””

“Don’t.””

The word came out sharper than I expected.

“Don’t use that.””

He lowered his head.

“I did love her.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Because Claire asked me not to tell you.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

He took a shaky breath.

“Your first wife knew.””

The room went silent.

“Claire knew you were Lily’s biological father?””

Daniel nodded.

“No.””

My heart tightened.

“She knew I was.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Lily’s records were changed because someone wanted to hide my name.””

I felt dizzy.

The doctor quietly left the room.

I didn’t even notice.

“My daughter…”

Daniel nodded.

“She’s yours. She’s mine.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I never wanted to replace you.””

“But you lied.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me raise her.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me love her.””

Tears appeared in his eyes.

“Yes.””

I turned away.

The pain was too much.

Because suddenly every memory had another meaning.

Daniel at Lily’s birthday parties.

Daniel teaching her how to throw a baseball.

Daniel telling me how lucky I was to have such a great daughter.

Was he being kind?

Or was he secretly watching a life that belonged partly to him?

“Why didn’t Claire tell me?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

He sat down.

“Before Lily was born, Claire and I…”

He stopped.

I knew.

I didn’t want to hear it.

But I needed to.

“We made a mistake.””

The words felt disgusting.

“You and my wife.””

Daniel nodded.

“It happened once.””

I looked away.

“Once was enough.””

“Yes.””

He wiped his face.

“Claire ended things immediately. She chose you.””

I remembered Claire.

Her smile.

Her kindness.

The woman who always told me I was the best father she knew.

“She never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew you loved Lily.””

I looked at him.

“She was afraid the truth would destroy you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“And somehow hiding it didn’t?””

Daniel had no answer.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a folded paper.

“Your father knew too.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

“He found out years ago.””

I grabbed the paper.

It was another letter.

My father’s handwriting.

*Marcus,*

*I discovered something painful. Something that could destroy this family if handled without love.*

I continued.

*But blood does not create a father. Love does.*

My vision blurred.

My father knew.

And he still accepted Lily.

He still protected her.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why are you telling me now?””

His face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because Vanessa’s mother knows too.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“She knew Lily’s real father.””

“Why would that matter?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because she didn’t just want the inheritance.””

He paused.

“She wanted to use me.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“She knew if Marcus discovered Lily’s biological father was his own brother, it would destroy everything.””

The pieces connected.

The manipulation.

The lies.

The videos.

The plan.

“She wanted us fighting.””

Daniel nodded.

“She wanted you isolated.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Ethan.

I answered immediately.

“Ethan?””

His voice was shaking.

“Dad…”

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone broke into the house.””

My heart stopped.

“Are you and Lily okay?””

“We’re okay.””

I stood.

“What did they take?””

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“Nothing.””

“Then why break in?””

Another pause.

“They left something.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

Ethan swallowed.

“A note.””

I felt cold.

“What does it say?””

May you like

His voice trembled.

“‘You’re looking in the wrong place.’”
