Chapter 10: The File That Changed Lily’s Life
I stared at the folder in Daniel’s hand.
Every instinct inside me told me not to take it.
Not because I didn’t want the truth.
Because I was afraid of what the truth would destroy.
My entire life had been built on things I believed were real.
My marriage.
My brother.
My family.
Now every piece seemed to have a crack running through it.
Daniel stood outside my door, holding the folder like it was a weapon.
“Marcus,” he said quietly.
“You need to see this.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.””
I looked between them.
“What is inside?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Documents about Lily’s birth.””
Lily’s name made my chest tighten.
My daughter was upstairs.
Safe.
Unaware that the adults around her were tearing apart the world she knew.
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
“Talk.””
Daniel handed me the folder.
“Your first wife, Claire, discovered something before she died.””
I looked at the folder.
“You said that already.””
“This is different.””
He lowered his voice.
“She discovered that Lily’s birth records had been altered.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Daniel looked away.
“I found out because I helped Vanessa’s mother get access to those records.””
The confession hit like a punch.
“You helped her?””
He nodded.
“I was angry. I was jealous. I wanted what you had.””
I gripped the folder tighter.
“And you were willing to hurt a child?””
His face changed.
Regret.
Real regret.
“Yes.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Medical documents.
I flipped through them quickly.
Then I saw something.
A name.
A different name.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Your father suspected Lily’s biological records were changed because someone wanted to hide information.””
“What information?””
He looked toward the house.
“Vanessa’s mother believed Lily had a connection to her family.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You need to read the letter.””
I found an envelope inside the folder.
The handwriting was familiar.
Claire’s.
My hands started shaking.
A letter from my dead wife.
I opened it.
*Marcus,*
*If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you myself.*
I stopped.
My eyes blurred.
*I found out that someone has been asking questions about Lily. They are not interested in her money. They are interested in where she came from.*
I kept reading.
*The truth is complicated. But Lily is ours. No matter what anyone says.*
I exhaled.
At least that sentence remained.
Lily was mine.
Always.
The next line made my blood freeze.
*Someone is trying to convince people that Lily does not belong with us.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
The front door opened behind me.
Vanessa stepped outside.
“I can explain.””
I turned.
“Can you?””
She looked at the folder.
“You found Claire’s letter.””
“Yes.””
Her face fell.
“Marcus…”
“Did you know?””
She was silent.
“Did you know someone was trying to take my daughter away?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew my mother was obsessed with something.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed whatever was left.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
Vanessa cried.
“I was scared.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone was scared except Lily.””
She looked at me.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I pointed toward the house.
“She was the one being blamed. She was the one crying. She was the one who thought I didn’t believe her.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why are you helping me now?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because I found out what Vanessa’s mother planned to do next.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What next?””
Daniel looked at the house.
“She was going to take Lily away legally.””
The air left my lungs.
“How?””
Daniel opened another document.
“By claiming you were not Lily’s biological father.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Is it?””
My hands went cold.
Because suddenly, I remembered.
The altered records.
The missing documents.
The investigation.
The lies.
Daniel whispered:
“Marcus, there is a DNA report in that folder.””
I looked down.
There was one more envelope.
Sealed.
My name was written on it.
I slowly opened it.

And the first sentence made my entire world stop.
*Father: Unknown.*
