Chapter 18: The Woman Who Started It All

Vanessa’s mother walked into the room like she owned it.

Like she had never been afraid.

Like she hadn’t spent years hiding behind other people’s actions.

I stared at her.

“You.””

She smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

But instead, I felt something colder.

Calm.

Because after everything she had done, I finally understood.

Anger wouldn’t help me.

Only the truth would.

“Why?””

She tilted her head.

“Why what?””

“Why my family?””

She looked around the old house.

“Because your family was never as innocent as you believed.””

Victor stepped forward.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

She laughed.

“Still protecting him?””

I looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Of course they did.

Everyone knew everyone.

Everyone had secrets.

She smiled.

“We’ve known each other for years.””

Victor’s expression darkened.

“She was the one who helped create the plan.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“You said it would work.””

Her mother glanced at her.

“And it almost did.””

That sentence broke something.

Because Vanessa finally looked at her mother differently.

Not like a partner.

Like a victim.

“You used me.””

Her mother smiled.

“You were useful.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“You told me Marcus would never find out.””

“And you failed.””

The cruelty was effortless.

I almost felt sorry for Vanessa.

Almost.

She had hurt my children.

But now I saw where she learned it.

I looked at the woman.

“What was the plan?””

She walked toward the desk.

“Simple.””

She picked up one of the documents.

“Control the inheritance.””

I shook my head.

“Still money?””

She smiled.

“No.””

She looked at Lily.

“Control the future.””

Everyone went quiet.

Lily stood frozen.

Her mother continued:

“Your father discovered something important. Something that changed everything.””

I looked at Victor.

“What?””

She smiled.

“The truth about Lily’s bloodline.””

My hands tightened.

“You wanted her because of who she was.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because she is the last connection.””

“To what?””

She didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“To a fortune.””

I stared.

Again.

Money.

But this time bigger.

“Your father hid it,” Victor said.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your grandfather discovered a forgotten family asset.””

Vanessa’s mother smiled.

“And Lily is the legal heir.””

My head spun.

“She’s fifteen.””

“Exactly.””

She looked at me.

“She needs guardians.””

I understood.

They didn’t want Lily.

They wanted control over Lily.

Over everything connected to her.

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“You will never touch her.””

Vanessa’s mother smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

She pulled out a document.

A court notice.

My blood froze.

“What is that?””

She handed it to me.

“Temporary custody petition.””

I read the title.

My heart sank.

“She filed for custody?””

Vanessa looked horrified.

“You told me you weren’t going to do this.””

Her mother ignored her.

“She is questioning your ability to protect Lily.””

I laughed.

“After everything you did?””

She leaned closer.

“Marcus, the world doesn’t know what we know.””

She pointed at the papers.

“They only see a man who raised a child who may not be biologically his.””

My face went cold.

A weapon.

She had turned the truth into a weapon.

Then Lily stepped forward.

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice shook.

“But I know.””

The room became silent.

She looked at her grandmother.

“I know who raised me.””

The woman stared.

Lily continued:

“I know who stayed when I was sick.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“I know who taught me everything.””

Then she looked back.

“And I know who hurt me.””

For the first time, Vanessa’s mother looked uncertain.

Because she expected fear.

She didn’t expect Lily.

Lily took my hand.

“Dad.””

I looked at her.

“We need to stop running.””

My eyes filled.

She was still my little girl.

Then Ethan entered the room holding his phone.

“Dad.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at Vanessa’s mother.

“I found something.””

She frowned.

“What?””

Ethan held up the phone.

“The original security footage.””

My heart raced.

“What footage?””

He looked at me.

“The footage from the night Lily was accused.””

Then he looked at Vanessa’s mother.

“And it proves she was inside our house that night.””

The woman’s smile disappeared.

Ethan pressed play.

The video loaded.

And the first image appeared.

Vanessa’s mother standing in our living room.

May you like

Holding the broken necklace.

And smiling.
