Chapter 9: The Woman Who Wanted My Mother’s Life

The next morning, my father made one decision.

We were leaving the house.

Not forever.

Not yet.

But he didn’t want me sleeping under the same roof where Vanessa had spent years planning against us.

While Dad packed our bags, I stood in the hallway.

I looked around.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But now every memory had a shadow behind it.

Vanessa’s smile.

Her fake kindness.

The way she told Dad she loved our family.

It all felt like a performance.

At the hotel, Dad sat across from Robert and Mr. Harris.

They had discovered more information.

Vanessa wasn’t just connected to my mother’s past.

She had been connected to her work.

“She knew Sarah through a financial company,” Robert explained.

Dad frowned.

“My wife never mentioned her.””

“Because they weren’t friends,” Robert said.

“What were they?””

Robert opened a file.

“Rivals.””

I looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Dad looked at me.

“It means your mother may have discovered something Vanessa wanted hidden.””

Mr. Harris placed another document on the table.

“This is a copy of an old complaint.””

Dad read it.

His face changed.

“What?””

“It says Sarah accused a former employee of manipulating financial records.””

Dad whispered.

“Vanessa.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The pieces were fitting together.

That afternoon, Dad received a call from Vanessa.

He almost didn’t answer.

But he did.

I sat nearby, listening.

“Michael.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Desperate.

“Where is my stuff?””

Dad stayed silent.

“You can’t just take my life away.””

Dad looked at me.

Then answered.

“You tried to take mine.””

A pause.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You made choices.””

She became quiet.

Then she said:

“I loved you.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Did you?””

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Another pause.

“I didn’t start this because I hated you.””

Dad looked confused.

“Then why?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because I wanted what Sarah had.””

My heart stopped.

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“You had the perfect life.””

Dad gripped the phone.

“You destroyed it.””

“No.””

Her voice became emotional.

“You don’t know what it was like watching her have everything.””

Everything.

The word echoed.

Dad stood.

“You were jealous of my wife?””

“I was tired of being invisible.””

The call ended.

Dad stared at the phone.

I looked at him.

“Was she telling the truth?””

He sat down slowly.

“I don’t know.””

That scared me.

Because my father knew Vanessa was dangerous.

But he also knew she was human.

And sometimes the truth was more complicated than good and evil.

Two days later, the police contacted Dad.

They had searched Vanessa’s old belongings.

They found something hidden inside a locked box.

A handwritten letter.

Not from Vanessa.

From my mother.

Dad opened it carefully.

His hands shook.

The paper was old.

The ink was faded.

He read silently.

Then he looked at me.

“She wrote this before she died.””

“What does it say?””

He handed it to me.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Dear Michael,*

*If Vanessa ever becomes part of our lives, please remember one thing…*

I looked up.

“Dad.””

He couldn’t speak.

Because below that sentence was the name of the person my mother believed Vanessa was working with.

And it wasn’t Daniel.

May you like

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone my father trusted for years.
