Chapter 14: The Evidence My Mother Hid

The police arrived within an hour.

They searched the area around the hotel.

They checked security footage.

They looked for Andrew.

But he was gone.

Like he had never been there.

That was the thing about Andrew.

He didn’t act like someone running away.

He acted like someone who believed he would never be caught.

Dad sat quietly while detectives questioned him.

I watched him.

He looked exhausted.

But when he saw me watching, he smiled.

A small smile.

A “don’t worry” smile.

Even when he was worried himself.

After the detectives left, Dad found me sitting near the window.

“You okay?””

I nodded.

“Are you?””

He smiled sadly.

“I’m trying.””

I looked down.

“I thought families were supposed to protect each other.””

Dad sat beside me.

“They are.””

“Then why did they do this?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Because there was no simple answer.

“Sometimes people let anger become more important than love.””

I thought about Vanessa.

About Andrew.

About everyone who had chosen lies.

That evening, Emily returned.

She brought something else.

A small notebook.

“This belonged to Sarah.””

Dad took it carefully.

“Where did you get this?””

“She gave it to me before she died.””

My father looked shocked.

“She trusted you?””

Emily nodded.

“She knew I was scared, but she knew I would keep it safe.””

Dad opened the notebook.

The first pages were normal.

Notes about work.

Expenses.

Names.

Then we reached the final pages.

My mother had written everything.

Not just about Andrew.

About Vanessa too.

Dad read silently.

Then he handed it to me.

I looked at the page.

*Vanessa believes she is helping Andrew, but she doesn’t know the full truth.*

I looked at Dad.

“She knew?””

He nodded.

Mom had understood everything.

She knew Vanessa was being manipulated.

She knew Andrew was dangerous.

She knew something was coming.

The next line made my hands shake.

*Andrew told Vanessa that Michael abandoned his first family after Sarah’s death. He convinced her that she was taking back what Sarah stole from her.*

Dad looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Emily answered quietly.

“Andrew lied to her.””

“How?””

“About Sarah.””

She looked down.

“He told Vanessa things that weren’t true.””

“What things?””

Emily took a breath.

“He told Vanessa Sarah ruined his life.””

Dad looked angry.

“But Sarah didn’t.””

“No.””

“She helped people.””

“Yes.””

The truth was becoming clearer.

Andrew didn’t just want money.

He wanted revenge against a person who wasn’t even alive anymore.

And he used everyone around him.

Including Vanessa.

Then Dad found another page.

A page written only a few days before my mother died.

The handwriting was rushed.

*If Andrew succeeds, he will not stop with money. He wants Michael to lose everyone.*

Dad stopped reading.

Everyone went quiet.

Because that was exactly what happened.

He wanted Dad alone.

Broken.

Distracted.

Then the final sentence appeared.

*The only person who can expose him is the one person he underestimates.*

Dad looked confused.

“Who?””

I looked at the page.

Then I realized.

My mother had written it for me.

Not Dad.

Me.

The child everyone ignored.

The child Vanessa thought nobody would believe.

My father looked at me.

“She knew you would be strong.””

I swallowed.

“But I’m just a kid.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

He held my hand.

“You’re the reason she kept fighting.””

Before we could say anything else, Dad’s phone rang.

It was the detective.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

He stood immediately.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He grabbed his jacket.

“They found Andrew.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

Dad looked at me.

“At your old house.””

The same house where everything started.

And according to the detective…

May you like

Andrew wasn’t there to hide.

He was there to destroy the last piece of evidence.
