Chapter 12: The Missing Twelve Seconds
For three days, my father tried everything.
He called computer experts.
He sent the flash drive to specialists.
He searched through old backups.
But the missing twelve seconds stayed missing.
The most important twelve seconds of my mother’s message.
The part that could reveal who destroyed our family.
I watched Dad change during those days.
He still smiled at me.
He still made breakfast.
He still asked about school.
But there was something different.
He was carrying a weight he couldn’t put down.
One evening, I found him sitting alone in the living room.
The television was off.
The house was quiet.
“You miss her,” I said.
Dad looked up.
“Your mom?””
I nodded.
He smiled sadly.
“Every day.””
I sat beside him.
“Do you think she knew this would happen?””
He looked at the floor.
“I think she was trying to stop it.””
I thought about the video.
The way Mom looked into the camera.
Like she was speaking directly to me.
“She knew I would see it someday.””
Dad’s eyes filled slightly.
“Yes.””
The next morning, the computer specialist called.
Dad answered.
I watched him listen.
Then his face changed.
“You recovered it?””
My heart jumped.
He put the phone on speaker.
The specialist spoke.
“We recovered part of the damaged section.””
Dad leaned closer.
“Play it.””
A few seconds of static filled the room.
Then my mother’s voice returned.
“Michael…”
A pause.
“If you are watching this, you need to understand something.””
Static.
Then:
“Vanessa was not the one who started this.””
Dad looked shocked.
“What?””
My mother continued.
“She was manipulated.””
I froze.
Manipulated?
The video continued.
“The person behind this convinced Vanessa that she was helping him protect the family.””
Dad leaned closer.
“Who?””
Static.
A few seconds passed.
Then my mother said:
“The person who gave her the documents…”
The screen distorted.
We waited.
Then her voice returned.
“Was someone inside our family.””
Dad looked at me.
Inside our family.
Not outside.
Not a stranger.
Someone close.
The video ended.
But now we had a bigger question.
If Vanessa wasn’t the person who started everything…
Who was controlling her?
That afternoon, we received an unexpected visitor.
A woman stood outside the hotel room door.
She looked older.
Tired.
Afraid.
Dad opened the door halfway.
“Can I help you?””
She looked past him.
Then she saw me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
Dad became tense.
“Who are you?””
She took a breath.
“My name is Emily.””
Nobody moved.
Then she said:
“I worked with your mother.””
Dad stared.
“What do you want?””
Emily looked down.
“To tell you the truth.””
“What truth?””
She looked at me.
“The truth about why your mother died.””
The room went silent.
Dad stepped forward.
“You know what happened?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you come forward?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of who?””
Emily whispered:
“Your grandfather.””
Dad froze.
But before he could ask another question, Emily reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I kept this for years.””
Dad took it.
“What is it?””
Emily looked at me.
“It’s the last thing your mother wrote before she died.””
Dad opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
At the bottom was my mother’s handwriting.

And the final sentence made my father drop the paper.
*Michael, if you want to protect our daughter, you must never trust your own brother.*
