Chapter 6: The Phone That Exposed Her

The second phone was small and black.

Nothing special.

That was what scared me.

Something that looked so ordinary had been hiding so many secrets.

Dad placed it on the kitchen table.

The same table where Vanessa had served dinner.

The same table where she smiled at him and pretended everything was normal.

Now it sat there like evidence.

Like proof.

His lawyer, Mr. Harris, arrived an hour later.

He was a serious man with silver hair and a calm voice.

He shook my hand.

“Your father told me you were very brave.””

I looked down.

“I was scared.””

Mr. Harris nodded.

“Bravery usually happens when people are scared.””

Dad sat beside me.

“We need to understand what’s on that phone.””

Mr. Harris unlocked it carefully.

The first thing we saw was a list of conversations.

Most were between Vanessa and Daniel.

My heart sank.

Dad scrolled through them.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

He turned the phone toward Mr. Harris.

“I need you to read this.””

The lawyer looked.

His expression became serious.

Then he looked at me.

“Maybe you should wait outside.””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

Dad looked at me.

“You don’t have to hear this.””

“I want to know.””

Dad hesitated.

Then he nodded.

Mr. Harris continued.

The messages showed Vanessa and Daniel had been planning for months.

They talked about money.

They talked about documents.

They talked about convincing Dad to transfer ownership of the house.

But then we found something worse.

A conversation from two weeks earlier.

Vanessa:

*She’s becoming suspicious.*

Daniel:

*Then make her look unstable.*

I felt cold.

Dad kept reading.

Vanessa:

*If Michael thinks she’s lying, nobody will believe her.*

Daniel:

*Kids are easy to dismiss.*

I couldn't breathe.

Dad immediately put the phone down.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But angry.

“She was trying to make people think you were the problem.””

I stared at the table.

All those times Vanessa told me I was dramatic.

All those times she said nobody would believe me.

She had planned it.

She wanted me to doubt myself.

Mr. Harris continued searching.

Then he found another message.

A recent one.

Sent the night before Dad came home.

Vanessa:

*Tomorrow he signs.*

Daniel:

*And after that?*

Vanessa:

*After that, we don’t have to worry about the girl anymore.*

The room went silent.

Dad stood so quickly his chair moved backward.

“What does that mean?””

Mr. Harris looked concerned.

“We need to find out.””

My hands became cold.

“Dad?””

He immediately came to me.

“She’s not going to hurt you.””

“But she said—”

“I know.””

He hugged me.

“I know.””

That afternoon, Dad changed the locks.

He packed Vanessa’s remaining belongings.

He made sure I never had to be alone with her again.

But something still bothered me.

The phone.

There were hundreds of messages.

And we hadn't opened all of them.

That evening, Dad sat in his office reading through the files.

I was doing homework nearby.

For the first time in a long time, I wasn't afraid to make noise.

I was just being a kid.

Then Dad suddenly stopped.

“Wait.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He stared at the screen.

“This can’t be right.””

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

“The messages go back three years.””

Three years.

Before Vanessa married him.

Before she moved into our house.

Before I even knew her.

Dad kept scrolling.

Then he found a message with a date.

His face turned pale.

“What?””

He whispered.

“She knew your mother.””

I froze.

“My mom?””

Dad looked at the screen again.

The message was from Vanessa.

And it contained a name I had not heard in years.

My mother’s name.

Then Dad read the final line aloud.

And the truth behind Vanessa’s entire plan finally started to appear.

“She didn’t marry me for money.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“She married me because of your mother.””
