Chapter 3: The Door That Opened Too Soon
I stayed frozen on the stairs.
The house that had always felt confusing suddenly became terrifying.
A man's voice came from the kitchen.
Low.
Calm.
Familiar.
I pressed my hand against the wall and leaned forward.
Vanessa whispered, “Keep your voice down.””
The man laughed.
“Relax. Michael is gone.””
My heart pounded.
Michael.
My dad.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
Vanessa walked closer to him.
“You don’t understand. If he finds out everything, I lose everything.””
The man replied, “You worry too much.””
“I’m serious.””
A chair scraped against the floor.
“I already handled the messages.””
My stomach twisted.
Messages.
What messages?
I stepped backward slowly.
The floor creaked.
Both voices stopped.
“Did you hear that?”” Vanessa asked.
I ran upstairs.
I closed my bedroom door as quietly as possible and climbed into bed.
Seconds later, footsteps approached.
My doorknob turned.
“Are you awake?”” Vanessa asked.
I pretended to sleep.
The door opened slightly.
She stood there for a moment.
Watching.
Then she closed it.
The next morning, I acted like nothing happened.
That was the hardest thing I had ever done.
I ate breakfast across from Vanessa while she smiled like everything was normal.
Caleb complained about his cereal.
Lily talked about a party.
And Vanessa looked like the perfect mother.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Dad.
*I need you to answer one question honestly. Are you safe?*
I stared at the screen.
My fingers hovered.
I wanted to say everything.
I wanted to type:
No.
I am scared.
Please come home.
But I imagined Vanessa finding out.
I imagined her angry face.
So I typed only:
*Yes.*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
A minute later, another message came.
*Are you sure?*
My eyes filled with tears.
Dad knew.
Somehow, he knew.
Before I could answer, Vanessa walked into the room.
“What are you doing?””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
She stared at me.
“You’re hiding something.””
“No.””
She reached for my phone.
I pulled it back.
For the first time, I didn't let go.
Her eyebrows lifted.
“Excuse me?””
I swallowed.
“It's my phone.””
The room went quiet.
Caleb stopped eating.
Lily looked up.
Vanessa smiled, but it wasn't a kind smile.
“Oh.””
She nodded slowly.
“So now you’re brave?””
I said nothing.
She walked away.
But I saw something in her expression.
Fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
That was when I realized something.
She wasn't scared of me.
She was scared of what I might tell someone.
That afternoon, I heard Dad's car.
I ran to the window.
My heart jumped.
But it wasn't Dad.
It was the same man from the kitchen.
He walked inside carrying a folder.
Vanessa hugged him quickly.
I stepped back from the window.
The man looked around the house like he belonged there.
Then he opened the folder.
Vanessa whispered, “Are you sure this will work?””
He smiled.
“Michael will never suspect a thing.””
My hands went cold.
They were planning something.
Something bigger than hiding messages.
Something that involved my father.
I quietly grabbed my phone and turned on the recording app.
I moved closer to the stairs.
Then I heard the man say five words that changed everything.
“Once Michael signs the papers…”
I stopped recording.
Papers?
What papers?
Vanessa laughed softly.
“He’ll finally be out of our way.””
At that exact moment, my father's car pulled into the driveway.
The front door unlocked.
A loud click echoed through the house.
Vanessa and the man turned toward the entrance.
And standing there was my father, holding an open envelope in his hand.
But he wasn't looking at them.
May you like
He was looking at me.
And the expression on his face told me he had seen everything.
