Chapter 15: The Last Night In Our House
The police arrived before us.
But Dad insisted on coming.
“That house belongs to us,” he said.
“They can’t take it from us.””
I knew what he meant.
He wasn’t talking about walls.
He was talking about memories.
The house where my mother cooked.
The house where I learned to walk.
The house where Vanessa had hidden behind a smile.
When we arrived, police cars surrounded the driveway.
The front door was open.
My father stopped.
For a second, he looked like he was seeing every year of his life at once.
Then he walked inside.
I followed.
The house was damaged.
Drawers were open.
Pictures were broken.
Someone had searched everything.
Detective Miller met us in the hallway.
“He was here.””
Dad looked around.
“Where is he?””
“He escaped.””
My father clenched his fists.
“Again?””
Detective Miller nodded.
“But he left something.””
They led us downstairs.
To the hidden room.
The room where my mother’s secrets had waited for years.
Inside was a broken box.
And a message written on the wall.
Three words.
*YOU FAILED, MICHAEL.*
Dad stared at it.
I saw pain in his eyes.
Not fear.
Pain.
Detective Miller pointed to the table.
“There’s a recorder.””
Dad picked it up.
A small device.
Old.
But still working.
He pressed play.
Andrew’s voice filled the room.
“Michael.””
Everyone became silent.
“I know you’re listening.””
My father stood completely still.
Andrew continued.
“You always thought you were the better brother.””
A pause.
“You got the company. The wife. The perfect daughter.””
Dad looked down.
“But you never understood.””
Andrew’s voice became colder.
“I didn’t want your money.””
The recording crackled.
“I wanted you to feel what I felt.””
Dad closed his eyes.
Andrew continued.
“When Sarah found out, she ruined everything.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Dad looked at the recorder.
Andrew laughed.
“She thought she could expose me.””
A pause.
“She was too late.””
The room became cold.
My father whispered:
“What are you saying?””
But the recording continued.
“Vanessa was easy to control.””
Another pause.
“Daniel was easy to buy.””
Then Andrew said the words that changed everything.
“But Sarah…”
The recording stopped.
Everyone froze.
Detective Miller checked the device.
“The battery died.””
Dad looked furious.
“No.””
He grabbed it.
“No.””
Because once again, the truth was just out of reach.
But then I noticed something.
A tiny memory card inside the recorder.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed.
“The card.””
The detective removed it carefully.
They connected it to a laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
The file name was:
*FINAL_CONFESSION*
Dad looked at me.
Everyone gathered around.
Detective Miller pressed play.
Static.
Then Andrew’s voice.
Clear.
Close.
“I know you’ll find this.””
A pause.
“That’s why I recorded it.””
Dad stared at the screen.
Andrew continued.
“The truth is…”
The audio stopped.
A loading circle appeared.
Everyone waited.
Then the file resumed.
And Andrew spoke the sentence that made every person in the room freeze.
“The night Sarah died…”
The recording continued.
May you like
And for the first time in years…
We were finally going to hear what really happened.
