Chapter 5: The Child Who Heard Everything
Nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
Caleb stood frozen on the stairs, gripping the railing.
He looked like a child who had accidentally opened a door to something he wasn't supposed to see.
Dad slowly turned toward him.
“Caleb?””
My stepbrother looked down.
“I didn’t mean to…”
Vanessa immediately moved toward him.
“Go upstairs.””
But Caleb didn’t move.
“Mom said…”
“Caleb.””
Her voice was sharp.
The same voice she used with me.
Except this time, he was the one hearing it.
Dad noticed.
“Let him talk.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Michael, he’s just a kid.””
“So is my daughter.””
The words landed hard.
Caleb swallowed.
“She said you might not come home.””
Dad stared at him.
“What?””
Caleb looked at Vanessa.
“She said after you signed the papers, we would move somewhere else.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“Caleb, stop talking.””
“But you said…”
“Enough!””
The shout echoed through the house.
Caleb flinched.
And Dad saw it.
He saw the same fear I had felt.
His expression softened.
“Caleb, come here.””
Slowly, Caleb walked down the stairs.
He looked embarrassed.
“I thought Dad was just traveling longer.””
Dad crouched beside him.
“Why would you think that?””
Caleb looked at the floor.
“Mom said you were tired of this house.””
My chest tightened.
She had been telling everyone a different story.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
She crossed her arms.
“You’re twisting things.””
“No.””
Dad stood.
“I’m finally hearing things clearly.””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Dad stepped aside.
“Go ahead.””
She stopped.
The confidence disappeared.
“You’re not going to stop me?””
“No.””
Dad's voice was calm.
“But Daniel is staying.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
Dad held up his phone.
“I already sent copies of everything to my attorney.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You recorded us?””
“I recorded enough.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You planned this?””
Dad shook his head.
“No. You planned it.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Vanessa laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“You think you’re the hero here?””
Dad looked confused.
“What?””
“You weren’t home.””
Her voice became louder.
“You were always working. Always traveling. You left me alone with everything.””
I watched Dad carefully.
Because that was the first time she sounded almost honest.
Almost.
Dad nodded slowly.
“I should have been more present.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“But that doesn’t excuse what you did.””
Her face hardened.
“I took care of this family.””
“No.””
Dad pointed toward me.
“You controlled my daughter.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Vanessa looked at me.
And for a second, I thought she might apologize.
She didn't.
Instead, she whispered:
“You ruined everything.””
I stepped backward.
Dad immediately moved between us.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re choosing her?””
Dad looked at me.
Then back at Vanessa.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
The next hour felt unreal.
Dad called his lawyer.
Daniel sat silently at the table.
Vanessa walked around the house collecting things, but she didn't have the power she had before.
Not anymore.
That night, Dad and I sat on the porch.
The sky was dark.
The neighborhood was quiet.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not seeing it sooner.””
I looked down.
“I thought maybe I was just being difficult.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were a kid asking for help.””
I leaned against him.
For the first time in months, I felt safe.
But that feeling didn't last long.
The next morning, Dad received a phone call.
I watched his face change as he listened.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
Then:
“Where did you find it?””
He looked at me.
His expression was serious.
After he ended the call, he sat down beside me.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Dad took a deep breath.
“They found something hidden in Vanessa’s old room.””
“What?””
He looked at the floor.
“A second phone.””
My stomach tightened.
Dad picked up the phone.
“And there are messages on it.””
I swallowed.
“What kind of messages?””
Dad looked at the screen.
May you like
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Messages about you.””
