Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Envelope

The moment my father walked through the front door, the entire house changed.

The laughter disappeared.

The television continued playing in the background, but nobody was watching anymore.

Vanessa stood frozen near the kitchen counter. The man beside her suddenly looked less confident than he had a few seconds earlier.

And Dad…

Dad looked at me.

Not with anger.

Not with disappointment.

With heartbreak.

I had never seen my father look that way before.

“Dad…” I whispered.

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“I’m home early,” he said quietly.

Vanessa recovered first.

“Michael! What are you doing here?””

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

She walked toward him with a smile, but Dad didn't move.

“I could ask you the same question.””

Her smile faded slightly.

“What do you mean?””

Dad lifted the envelope in his hand.

“This was delivered to my hotel this morning.””

The man beside her shifted uncomfortably.

I recognized him now.

His name was Daniel.

He was someone Dad had worked with years ago.

Someone Dad trusted.

At least, he used to.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Why are you acting strange?””

Dad looked at her.

“Because I spent the last three days watching my daughter clean floors while your children sat on the couch.””

Silence.

Vanessa's face turned pale.

“What?””

“I saw everything.””

Her expression changed instantly.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You installed cameras?””

Dad shook his head.

“Smart smoke detectors. Something you laughed about.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Michael, you’re misunderstanding.””

Dad turned toward him.

“Am I?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stood near the staircase, holding my phone tightly.

My hands were shaking.

I wanted Dad to say something.

I wanted him to tell me he believed me.

Then he walked toward me.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

I ran.

The second his arms wrapped around me, I started crying.

All the tears I had been holding back for weeks came out.

“I tried to tell you,” I whispered.

Dad held me tighter.

“I know.””

“I thought you wouldn’t believe me.””

He pulled back and looked at me.

“Never think that.””

Behind him, Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.

“Oh, please.””

Dad looked over.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“You’re really going to believe a child over your wife?””

The room went quiet.

Dad's expression hardened.

“I’m going to believe what I saw.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You only saw a few clips.””

“No.””

Dad pointed toward the ceiling.

“I saw months.””

Her face changed.

Months.

That word hit her.

Because she knew.

She knew this wasn't just about one Saturday.

Dad walked to the kitchen table and placed the envelope down.

“Open it.””

Vanessa stared.

“What is that?””

“You tell me.””

Nobody moved.

Finally, Dad opened the envelope himself.

Inside were printed documents.

His hands tightened around the pages.

“These are copies of bank transfers.””

Daniel looked away.

My heart raced.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Money from my account.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That’s not what it looks like.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can explain.””

“Good.””

Dad placed the papers on the table.

“Explain why money was transferred to Daniel’s company without my approval.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“It was an investment.””

Dad laughed once.

A cold, painful laugh.

“An investment?””

“Yes.””

“Then why was it hidden?””

Neither of them answered.

I watched my father’s face.

The sadness there was worse than anger.

He had trusted them.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Dad looked at her.

“No. I made a mistake when I ignored the small signs.””

She looked confused.

“What signs?””

Dad pointed toward me.

“My daughter stopped smiling.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She’s always been sensitive.””

“No.””

Dad's voice became firm.

“She became afraid.””

The room went silent again.

Then Daniel suddenly grabbed his jacket.

“I should leave.””

Dad blocked the doorway.

“Not yet.””

Daniel stopped.

“I think you owe me some answers.””

Daniel looked nervous.

For the first time, I saw the fear on his face.

Dad picked up another paper from the envelope.

“And this is interesting.””

He looked directly at Vanessa.

“Because the last page has your signature.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Dad slowly turned the document around.

“You signed a power of attorney form.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Dad looked at me.

“It means someone was trying to make decisions with my money without me.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand.””

Dad folded the papers.

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Caleb was standing at the top of the stairs.

His face was pale.

He had heard everything.

And then he said something that made Vanessa lose all control.

“Mom…”

May you like

His voice trembled.

“You told me Dad was never coming back.””
