Chapter 18: The Room Beneath The House
The police searched every room.
Every window.
Every entrance.
But whoever entered had disappeared.
Again.
David stood in the hallway holding the note.
He was exhausted from chasing shadows.
But he refused to stop.
Not now.
Not after learning how much had been hidden from Jasmine.
“We find the archive,” he said.
The next morning, they returned to the old estate.
The house where Jasmine grew up.
The house everyone had fought over.
The house that had been hiding the truth underneath it.
Michael carried the key.
“I never knew where this went.””
David looked at him.
“You were part of this family for years.””
Michael nodded.
“And I still knew less than Eleanor.””
They searched the basement.
Old storage rooms.
Broken furniture.
Hidden corners.
Then Jasmine noticed something.
“Dad.””
She pointed at the wall.
There was a small marking.
A symbol carved into the stone.
Michael stepped closer.
“My father used that symbol.””
David touched it.
“How do you know?””
“Because he showed it to me once.””
David looked surprised.
“You knew?””
Michael shook his head.
“I didn’t know what it meant.””
The key fit perfectly.
A hidden door opened.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
Nobody spoke.
They walked down slowly.
At the bottom was a small room.
Inside were shelves.
Boxes.
Files.
Everything preserved.
The family’s secrets.
David found the first folder.
“Company accounts.””
Jasmine found another.
“Property records.””
Michael found a locked box.
His hands froze.
“What?””
David asked.
Michael looked at the name written on it.
“Eleanor.””
They opened it.
Inside was a final letter.
Not recorded.
Not hidden digitally.
A letter she had written by hand.
David opened it.
“My dear David…”
His voice shook.
He continued reading.
“I know you will eventually discover the truth.””
Jasmine stood beside him.
The letter continued.
“I know you will feel betrayed. But please understand, I was trying to protect Jasmine from a world of people who only saw her as an inheritance.””
David paused.
Then read the next line.
“The greatest danger was never Michael.””
Everyone looked at Michael.
Eleanor’s words continued.
“It was the person who convinced Michael he needed to fight.””
David’s eyes moved down the page.
And then he saw the name.
He stopped.
Jasmine noticed.
“What is it?””
David couldn’t answer.
Michael grabbed the letter.
Then he froze too.
Because the person Eleanor named was someone nobody suspected.
Someone who had been helping them.
Someone who had been standing beside them throughout the entire investigation.
Jessica.
But before anyone could process it, another document slipped from the envelope.
A document with a recent date.
A date after Eleanor’s death.
David picked it up.
His face changed again.
“This was signed last month.””
Jasmine looked confused.
“By who?””
David turned the page.
The signature was clear.
Jessica Carter.
Michael stepped back.
“She’s still involved.””
Then they heard footsteps above them.
Someone was walking through the house.
Slowly.
Carefully.
David closed the archive door.
Everyone became silent.
A voice echoed from upstairs.
“David?””
Jessica.
But something was different.
Her voice wasn’t scared.
It was calm.
Too calm.
David looked at Jasmine.
Because now they had to answer the question that terrified them most.
May you like
Was Jessica another victim?
Or had she been the person Eleanor warned them about all along?
