Chapter 15: The Daughter’s Hidden Truth
David did not speak on the drive home.
Neither did Jasmine.
The birth certificate had been printed in his mind.
A name.
A date.
A question he was terrified to ask.
When they arrived home, David went straight to his office.
Jasmine followed.
“Dad.””
He stopped.
She saw the pain in his eyes.
“Are you worried?””
David looked at her.
“I’m worried I don’t know my own family.””
Jasmine sat down.
“You are still my father.””
The words nearly broke him.
“But what if…”
He couldn’t finish.
Jasmine reached for his hand.
“Whatever Mom was trying to tell us, we’ll face it.””
David nodded.
Then Jessica entered.
She looked nervous.
“I heard about the video.””
David looked at her.
“Did you know?””
Jessica shook her head.
“No.””
“Did Eleanor ever talk about this?””
Jessica hesitated.
“About Jasmine?””
David immediately noticed.
“What?””
Jessica sat down.
“Your mother had secrets.””
Jasmine looked at her.
“What kind?””
Jessica looked at David.
“She was protecting someone.””
“Who?””
Jessica whispered:
“Jasmine.””
The room became silent.
David frowned.
“She was protecting our daughter.””
Jessica nodded.
“Yes.””
“From what?””
Jessica looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer frustrated David.
“Everyone knows pieces of the truth except me.””
Jessica looked at him.
“That’s because Eleanor was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Jessica’s voice became quiet.
“Of someone finding out Jasmine was connected to the original family trust.””
David looked confused.
“She was my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide anything?””
Jessica looked at Jasmine.
“Because your mother discovered something about your birth.””
Jasmine stopped breathing.
“My birth?””
David stood.
“What are you saying?””
Jessica shook her head.
“I don’t know the full story.””
Before anyone could continue, Ethan rushed into the room.
“Dad.””
David turned.
“What happened?””
Ethan held a folder.
“I found this in Mom’s old things.””
Jessica looked shocked.
“Where?””
“In the attic.””
He handed it to Jasmine.
She opened it.
Inside was an envelope.
Her name was written on it.
In her mother’s handwriting.
Jasmine’s hands trembled.
She opened the letter.
The first line made her eyes fill with tears.
*“My precious Jasmine, if you are reading this, then the truth I feared has finally reached you.””*
David sat down.
The letter continued.
*“There is something about your birth that I never told your father.””*
Jasmine looked at David.
Then back at the letter.
*“Not because I didn’t trust him. Because I was trying to protect him.””*
Her hands shook.
The next sentence was the one that changed everything.
*“David is the man who raised you, but he is not your biological father.””*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Jasmine felt like the room was spinning.
David stared at the letter.
The daughter he had loved since the day she was born.
The child he had protected.
The person he had built his entire life around.
And now he was learning there was a truth hidden from him.

Then the letter revealed one final detail.
*“Your biological father is someone who has been inside this family all along.””*
