Chapter 17: The Enemy They Never Saw
The message on Michael’s phone was simple.
*“You should have stayed away from the past.””*
David stared at it.
“Who sent that?””
Michael put the phone away.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
Michael looked at him.
“No.””
The honesty surprised David.
Michael sighed.
“But I know what happens when they feel threatened.””
Jasmine looked confused.
“Who are they?””
Michael looked around the room.
Then answered:
“The people who have been controlling everything.””
David shook his head.
“Richard is gone.””
Michael nodded.
“Richard was never the top.””
Everyone froze.
Jasmine whispered:
“There’s someone above him?””
Michael looked at her.
“Yes.””
The house suddenly felt colder.
David walked toward the desk.
“Tell me everything.””
Michael hesitated.
Then he sat down.
“When Eleanor discovered the missing money, she thought Richard was responsible.””
“But he wasn’t.””
“No.””
Michael looked at the old family photographs.
“Richard was only moving money for someone else.””
“Who?””
Michael looked at David.
“Someone who knew the family better than anyone.””
David felt a chill.
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Your father.””
Nobody spoke.
David stared.
“My father died ten years ago.””
Michael nodded.
“His name continued after his death.””
Jasmine frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Michael explained.
“Your grandfather created a private financial network. Not everything was recorded under the company name.””
David looked shocked.
“He had secret accounts?””
“Yes.””
“And who controlled them?””
Michael looked at him.
“Eleanor discovered the accounts were still active after your father died.””
David stood.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael shook his head.
“She found payments.””
“To who?””
Michael looked at Jasmine.
“People inside the family.””
Jessica whispered:
“Richard.””
Michael nodded.
“And others.””
David’s mind raced.
For years, he believed the conflict started with Michael wanting money.
But maybe Michael was only one piece.
“What did Eleanor plan to do?””
Michael answered:
“Expose everyone.””
Jasmine looked at the letter.
“That’s why she was killed.””
Michael nodded.
“She got too close.””
A silence followed.
Then Jasmine noticed something.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
“My mother said she trusted someone completely.””
David nodded.
“Yes.””
Jasmine looked at Michael.
“What if she wasn’t talking about Richard?””
Michael frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Jasmine opened the letter again.
“She said the person she trusted most was not who she thought.””
David looked at the page.
Then his expression changed.
Because the wording mattered.
Not the person who betrayed her.
The person she trusted.
Jessica suddenly stood.
“I need to show you something.””
She ran upstairs.
Everyone looked confused.
A few minutes later, she returned holding a small box.
“I found this after Eleanor died.””
David stared.
“You had this?””
Jessica nodded.
“I never opened it.””
“Why?””
“Because it had Eleanor’s name on it.””
Jasmine opened the box.
Inside was a necklace.
And a small key.
David recognized the necklace.
Eleanor wore it every day.
Jasmine turned it over.
There was a hidden engraving.
A date.
The day Jasmine was born.
Beneath it was another word.
*“Archive.””*
Michael looked shocked.
“The family archive.””
David frowned.
“What?””
Michael stood.
“Your father created a hidden archive.””
“Where?””
Michael looked at the key.
Then toward the old family estate.
“Under the house.””
Everyone froze.
Jasmine whispered:
“My whole life was built above a secret.””
David grabbed his coat.
“Then we find it.””
But before they could leave, the lights in the house suddenly went out.
A crash came from upstairs.
Someone was inside.
David ran toward the staircase.
And on the floor outside the office was a note.
May you like
Only four words.
*“You are too late.””*
