Chapter 16: The Name Hidden In The Past

The letter fell from Jasmine’s hands.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

David stared at the page as if the words might rearrange themselves into something else.

Something less painful.

Something easier to accept.

But they didn’t.

*David is the man who raised you, but he is not your biological father.*

The sentence remained.

Jasmine looked at him.

“Dad…”

David forced himself to meet her eyes.

But he couldn’t speak.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was afraid.

Afraid that the truth would somehow change the only thing he had ever been certain about.

Their bond.

Jessica slowly sat down.

“I didn’t know.””

David looked at her.

“You knew Eleanor had a secret.””

“I knew she was protecting something.””

“But not this?””

Jessica shook her head.

“No.””

Ethan stood near the doorway, silent.

For once, he had no excuse.

No explanation.

Just shock.

Jasmine picked up the letter again.

Her hands trembled.

She continued reading.

*“David, if you are reading this, please understand. I never doubted your love for Jasmine. You are her father in every way that matters.””*

David closed his eyes.

A tear escaped before he could stop it.

Jasmine immediately moved closer.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

“You still call me that.””

The pain in his voice broke her heart.

“Because you are.””

David looked away.

“But I’m not…”

“You are.””

She grabbed his hand.

“You taught me how to ride a bike. You stayed up all night when I was sick. You were there when I graduated.””

Her voice cracked.

“DNA doesn’t erase twenty years.””

David looked at her.

And for the first time since discovering the truth, he allowed himself to breathe.

Then he looked back at the letter.

“There’s a name.””

Everyone became quiet.

Jasmine looked down.

At the bottom of the page was a sentence.

*“His identity is the reason I kept this secret.””*

The name was written underneath.

David read it.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

Jasmine looked at him.

“Who is it?””

David couldn’t answer.

Jessica stepped closer.

“David?””

He handed her the letter.

Jessica read the name.

Her face immediately turned pale.

“Impossible.””

Jasmine looked between them.

“Who?””

David finally spoke.

“Your biological father…”

He stopped.

Then whispered:

“Was my brother.””

The room went silent.

Michael.

Nobody needed to say his name.

Everyone understood.

Jasmine stepped back.

“No.””

David shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Her eyes filled with confusion.

“My mother and Michael?””

“I don’t know.””

Jessica looked at the letter again.

“Eleanor must have found out after Jasmine was born.””

Jasmine looked hurt.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

David answered quietly.

“Because she wanted to protect you.””

“But protect me from what?””

Nobody had an answer.

Then Michael appeared at the doorway.

Everyone turned.

He had heard everything.

His face looked empty.

Like he had just watched his entire past collapse.

“Is it true?””

David stared at him.

“What are you doing here?””

Michael ignored him.

He looked at Jasmine.

“Is that letter real?””

Jasmine said nothing.

Michael walked closer.

For the first time, he didn’t look angry.

He looked broken.

“I always wondered.””

David’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Michael looked at him.

“Why Eleanor chose you.””

The room froze.

David stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Michael laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Because she loved you.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Michael looked at Jasmine.

“Your mother and I were young.””

Jasmine felt sick.

“We made a mistake.””

David’s voice became dangerous.

“Careful.””

Michael continued.

“Eleanor ended it before anyone knew.””

“And then?””

Michael looked at Jasmine.

“Then she found out she was pregnant.””

Jasmine covered her mouth.

David stared.

“And she married me.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“Because she knew I was not ready to be a father.””

David’s anger faded slightly.

Not because he forgave him.

Because he was trying to understand.

Then Michael said something nobody expected.

“She made me promise.””

“A promise?””

“That I would never tell Jasmine.””

Jasmine looked at him.

“Why?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Because she believed you deserved one father.””

The words hurt.

Because for the first time, Michael sounded less like an enemy.

And more like someone carrying a lifetime of regret.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

David noticed.

“Who is it?””

Michael didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

Then a message appeared.

Michael read it.

And whispered:

“They know.””

David stepped closer.

“Who?””

May you like

Michael looked at everyone.

“The people who killed Eleanor.””
