Chapter 1: The Paper That Changed Everything
“Dad, why did our lawyer send me a document saying I no longer have a right to our family property?””
Jasmine’s voice shook as she stood in the middle of the drawing room, holding the paper with both hands.
For years, she had believed the old family estate represented everything her father had built. The wide wooden staircase, the paintings hanging along the walls, the garden where she used to run as a child — every corner carried a memory.
And now, according to the document in her hand, she had been erased from it.
David looked up from the television, confused at first. He had been watching an old football match, enjoying one of the rare quiet evenings he had at home.
But the moment he saw Jasmine’s face, he knew something was wrong.
“What document?”” David asked, immediately turning off the television.
Jasmine walked closer and placed the paper on the table.
“The lawyer sent this to me today. It says I’ve been removed from the family property ownership records.””
David picked up the document. His eyes moved quickly across the page.
Then his expression changed.
“What?”” he whispered.
The room became silent.
David had spent thirty years building his company and protecting his family’s future. The estate was not just a house. It was the place where he planned to leave a legacy for Jasmine.
He looked at his daughter.
“Who did this?””
“I don’t know,” Jasmine replied.
“I thought maybe you approved it.””
David shook his head.
“I would never remove you from this property.””
Before Jasmine could answer, footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Jessica entered the room carrying a cup of coffee. She looked completely calm, almost as if she already knew what conversation was happening.
David immediately turned toward her.
“Jessica. Did you know about this?””
She stopped walking.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Jessica slowly placed her cup on the table.
“Yes.””
Jasmine stared at her stepmother.
“Yes?””
Jessica looked at her without emotion.
“I told the lawyer to remove you from the property.””
The words felt heavier than Jasmine expected.
Her mouth opened slightly.
“What?””
Jessica sat down on the chair across from them.
“I did it because I had to protect the family.””
Jasmine’s hands tightened around the edge of the document.
“Protect the family? You removed me from my own family property.””
Jessica sighed.
“You’re nineteen, Jasmine. You’re young. You don’t understand how serious ownership decisions are.””
David stepped forward.
“Jessica, what exactly did you do?””
Jessica looked at him.
“I transferred the property rights to my son, Ethan.””
David froze.
“You did what?””
“I was worried Jasmine might sell the property one day or make a decision that would damage the family’s future,” Jessica explained.
“Ethan is more responsible. He can handle it.””
Jasmine felt her eyes burning.
“You gave away something that belonged to my father?””
Jessica remained calm.
“I made a decision for everyone.””
David’s face turned red.
“No. You made a decision without me.””
Jessica crossed her arms.
“I was trying to help.””
“Help?”” David repeated.
“You secretly changed ownership of my family property.””
“I wanted my son to have something too,” Jessica said.
“Is that such a crime?””
David stared at her.
“Whether Ethan gets anything or not is my decision.””
The confidence in Jessica’s expression disappeared for the first time.
David pulled out his phone.
“I’m calling the lawyer.””
Jessica immediately stood up.
“David, wait.””
“No,” he replied firmly.
“You are going to fix this.””
Jasmine watched her father dial the number.
For the first time in months, she felt someone was standing beside her.
She had always tried to accept Jessica as her family. After her biological mother passed away, she had hoped her stepmother would become someone she could trust.
But now she wondered how long Jessica had been planning this.
The lawyer answered.
“Hello, Mr. Carter.””
David put the phone on speaker.
“I need you to explain why my daughter was removed from the family property.””
There was a pause.
Then the lawyer spoke carefully.
“Mr. Carter… before I answer, you need to know something.””
David frowned.
“What?””
The lawyer took a breath.
“The transfer request was not the first document Jessica submitted.””
Everyone in the room became still.
David looked at Jessica.
“What other document?””
The lawyer’s voice lowered.
“She submitted a document claiming you had already approved the transfer.””
May you like
David slowly turned toward his wife.
And Jasmine realized the paper in her hand was only the beginning.
