Chapter 11: The Confession Nobody Expected

The next morning, David sat in the family living room surrounded by documents.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But everything he believed about his family had changed.

Jasmine walked in carrying the old notebook.

“You haven’t slept.””

David looked up.

“Neither have you.””

She sat beside him.

“I keep thinking about Mom.””

David softened.

“I do too.””

Jasmine looked at the notebook.

“She knew something bad was coming.””

David nodded.

“She was trying to protect us.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Jasmine asked the question both of them were avoiding.

“Do you believe Jessica hurt her?””

David looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

That answer surprised Jasmine.

“You don’t hate her?””

David sighed.

“I’m angry. I’m hurt. But I need the truth.””

Before Jasmine could respond, the front door opened.

Jessica walked inside.

She looked like someone who had aged years overnight.

“I need to tell you something.””

David stood.

“Another secret?””

Jessica nodded.

“Yes.””

Jasmine looked away.

“Why should we believe you?””

Jessica accepted the question.

“You shouldn’t.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“I kept this because I was afraid.””

David opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Eleanor’s handwriting.

Again.

David read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Jasmine.

She read the words.

*“Jessica, if anything happens to me, you must protect Jasmine. She is the only person who can inherit the property without corruption.””*

Jasmine looked confused.

“She trusted Jessica?””

Jessica nodded.

“Your mother trusted me.””

David looked at her.

“Then why did you betray that trust?””

Jessica began crying.

“Because Michael threatened me.””

Michael, who had been sitting silently in the corner, immediately stood.

“Don’t blame me for your choices.””

Jessica turned toward him.

“You threatened my son.””

Everyone froze.

David looked at Ethan.

“What?””

Jessica wiped her tears.

“Michael found out Ethan had a medical problem when he was younger.””

Ethan looked down.

“He used it against me.””

Jasmine stared.

“What did he say?””

Jessica’s voice shook.

“He said if I didn’t help him gain control of the property, he would destroy Ethan’s future.””

David looked furious.

“And you believed him?””

“He showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Fake ones.””

Michael laughed.

“You’re making yourself the victim now?””

Jessica looked at him.

“You knew I was scared.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You agreed because you wanted Ethan to have the property.””

Jessica didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty silenced everyone.

She looked at Jasmine.

“I was selfish.””

Jasmine felt tears in her eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””

Jessica whispered:

“Because after Eleanor died, I was afraid.””

David’s voice was quiet.

“Afraid of what?””

“That if I told you everything, Michael would come after Jasmine.””

The room went silent.

Then Ethan finally spoke.

“I knew.””

Everyone turned.

Jessica looked at her son.

“What?””

Ethan swallowed.

“I knew Michael was threatening you.””

Jasmine stared.

“You knew all this time?””

“I was scared.””

The disappointment on Jasmine’s face hurt him.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You helped him.””

“I know.””

David walked toward Ethan.

“You don’t understand what you almost destroyed.””

Ethan nodded.

“I do now.””

Then a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A car window had been smashed.

David rushed outside.

On the ground was a package.

Inside was a phone.

The screen was already open.

A video was playing.

It showed Eleanor.

Alive.

Sitting in a car.

Speaking directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, it means they failed to stop me.””

David stopped breathing.

Jasmine grabbed his arm.

Her mother’s voice continued.

“David, I need you to know the truth.””

The video cut for a second.

Then Eleanor said something that changed everything.

“The person you trust most is not who you think.””

The screen went black.

May you like

Then one final message appeared.

*“The video is only the first part.””*
