Chapter 12: The Hidden Recording
David watched the video again.
And again.
He studied every second.
Every movement.
Every word.
Eleanor looked frightened.
But not defeated.
She knew something was coming.
“She recorded this for us,” Jasmine said softly.
David nodded.
“She knew she might not get another chance.””
Michael stood behind them.
“You don’t know that.””
David turned.
“You have been lying for twelve years.””
Michael looked away.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“No,” David replied.
“You were protecting your secrets.””
The police took the phone for analysis, but before they left, they confirmed something important.
“The recording was made the same night as the accident.””
David felt a weight in his chest.
That meant Eleanor knew.
She knew before she died.
That someone was coming for her.
Later that evening, the family gathered in the living room.
Nobody trusted anyone.
Not anymore.
Jessica sat quietly.
Ethan stayed beside her.
Michael remained separated from everyone.
Then Jasmine noticed something.
“Dad.””
David looked up.
“What?””
“The video.””
“What about it?””
“Mom said ‘the person you trust most.’”
David nodded.
“Yes.””
“But she didn’t say who.””
The room became quiet.
Jasmine continued.
“She wanted us to figure it out.””
David looked at the phone.
A thought crossed his mind.
“The file.””
“What file?””
“The original recording.””
He checked the device.
There was a hidden folder.
Password protected.
David frowned.
“How did Eleanor hide this?””
Jessica answered quietly.
“She was careful.””
Everyone looked at her.
Jessica continued:
“She always believed information was power.””
David tried a few passwords.
Nothing worked.
Then Jasmine touched the screen.
“Try my birthday.””
David looked at her.
He entered it.
The folder opened.
Inside was another video.
A longer one.
Eleanor appeared again.
This time she was sitting in her office.
“If you found this, then you already know someone tried to take control of the property.””
She paused.
Her eyes looked directly into the camera.
“But the property is not the real reason they came after me.””
David frowned.
“What?””
The video continued.
“The real reason is what I discovered inside the family company.””
Jasmine looked at her father.
The family company.
Not the property.
Eleanor continued:
“There was money being moved through accounts that were created without my knowledge.””
David looked at Michael.
Michael’s face changed.
Eleanor continued.
“I found the person responsible.””
A pause.
Then:
“And it wasn’t Michael.””
Everyone froze.
Michael looked shocked.
“What?””
David stepped closer to the phone.
Eleanor’s voice continued.
“The person behind this is someone I trusted completely.””
The video showed Eleanor opening a folder.
Inside were documents.
Then she said:
“David, if you’re seeing this, you need to understand one thing.””
The screen flickered.
Her final words were barely audible.
“Your enemy has been living beside you.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly the question changed.
It wasn’t who wanted the property.
It wasn’t who threatened Jessica.
It wasn’t who betrayed the family.
It was something much worse.
