Chapter 9: The Document That Changed Everything

I drove home faster than I should have.

Robert followed behind me.

Neither of us spoke.

The house looked normal from outside.

That scared me.

After everything that happened, normal felt dangerous.

I opened the door.

“Daniel?””

No answer.

The living room was empty.

Then I saw the papers.

Hundreds of them.

Spread across the floor.

The blue folder from my grandmother’s collection was open on the table.

My heart dropped.

“She found it,” Robert whispered.

I looked at him.

“Who?””

But I already knew.

Victoria stepped out from the hallway.

Holding a document.

“You were always smarter than I expected, Emily.””

I froze.

“What are you doing?””

She smiled.

“I’m fixing a mistake.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

“I’m not.””

That answer surprised all of us.

Victoria laughed.

“Finally admitting it?””

Robert’s face hardened.

“I should have stopped you years ago.””

She looked at me.

“See? Everyone has secrets.””

“Where is Daniel?””

Her smile faded.

“Upstairs.””

I started moving.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

Victoria held up the document.

“You want your husband?””

She waved the paper.

“Then you should know what he signed.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“A confession.””

Robert’s face changed.

“No.””

Victoria smiled.

“Yes.””

She placed the paper on the table.

“Daniel finally admitted his role.””

I looked down.

My hands shook as I read.

It was a statement.

A confession that Daniel had accessed private documents.

Transferred funds.

And attempted to change ownership records.

The signature was his.

“Why are you showing me this?””

Victoria smiled.

“Because I want you to hate him.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t care about the truth.””

“No.””

Her honesty surprised me.

“I care about winning.””

There it was.

The thing I had always sensed.

Victoria wasn’t angry because I embarrassed her.

She wasn’t angry because of family values.

She wanted control.

Robert stepped forward.

“You’ll never get those shares.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

She turned toward me.

“Emily doesn’t have them.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She smiled.

“The shares were transferred.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

I looked at Robert.

“No.””

Victoria laughed.

“Your grandmother trusted the wrong person.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

She looked directly at Robert.

Then said:

“Your father-in-law.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Robert.

He didn’t speak.

And that scared me.

“Is it true?””

Robert closed his eyes.

For several seconds.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt different.

Because this time, I wasn’t shocked.

I was exhausted.

Everyone had taken something from me.

My trust.

My love.

My family.

“Why?”” I asked.

Robert looked broken.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

Victoria laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

Robert ignored her.

“Your grandmother put the shares under my control temporarily.””

“Temporarily?””

“Yes.””

“And you never returned them?””

“I tried.””

Victoria interrupted.

“No, you didn’t.””

Robert looked at her.

“You forced my hand.””

She smiled.

“You chose money over her.””

I looked between them.

“What are you saying?””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Robert didn’t steal from you, Emily.””

A pause.

“He made a deal.””

My heart pounded.

“With who?””

She smiled.

“With the person you trusted most.””

I looked upstairs.

Toward where Daniel was.

May you like

Then Victoria whispered:

“Your husband.””
