Chapter 2: The House That Wasn’t Theirs

I stood near the doorway, unable to move.

The pain in my hand was still spreading, but I barely noticed anymore.

Every person at that table was staring at Robert.

Even Victoria.

Especially Victoria.

“What are you talking about?”” she asked.

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Worried.

Robert opened the folder again and pulled out a document.

“The ownership records.””

Daniel laughed nervously.

“Dad, this isn’t the time for one of your dramatic speeches.””

Robert didn’t look at him.

“It’s exactly the time.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

I had known Robert as a quiet man.

He wasn’t like Victoria.

He didn’t raise his voice.

He didn’t demand attention.

But when he spoke, people listened.

“Emily bought this house six years ago.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at him.

“What?””

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Robert placed the document on the table.

“Your son knows.””

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked away.

That one movement told me everything.

“Daniel?”” I whispered.

He swallowed.

“Emily, don’t do this right now.””

“Do what?””

“Create more problems.””

I almost laughed.

More problems.

My hand was burned.

My face was swollen.

And somehow, I was still the problem.

Robert pushed the document toward me.

“When you inherited money from your grandmother, you used it to purchase this property before your marriage.””

I stared at the papers.

My grandmother’s house had been sold after she passed away.

The money she left me was the only thing I had from her.

Daniel had convinced me to invest it.

“You told me you wanted us to have a fresh start,” I said.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I did.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You wanted my money.””

Victoria slammed her hand against the table.

“Watch your tone.””

Robert turned toward his wife.

“No. You watch yours.””

The room became still.

I had never heard him speak to her like that.

Victoria’s face tightened.

“You’re humiliating me.””

Robert shook his head.

“You humiliated yourself.””

Daniel stood.

“Dad, this is between Emily and Mom.””

“No,” Robert replied.

“It became my business when my wife attacked a pregnant woman in my home.””

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“Your home?””

Robert looked at her.

“You know the truth.””

A strange feeling moved through my chest.

There were secrets here.

Secrets everyone knew except me.

I picked up the papers with my good hand.

The ownership documents were real.

My name was there.

Emily Carter.

The owner.

I remembered signing papers years ago.

Daniel told me it was easier if he handled everything.

He said he wanted to protect me from stress.

I believed him.

I always believed him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked Daniel.

He looked frustrated instead of guilty.

“Because it didn’t matter.””

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“We were married. Everything we had was shared.””

“No,” Robert said sharply.

“That’s not what happened.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“What are you saying?””

Robert reached back into the envelope.

“There’s more.””

Victoria stood up.

“Robert, don’t.””

That was the first time I heard fear in her voice.

Robert ignored her.

He pulled out another document.

“This house was placed into a protected trust before your marriage.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Robert looked at me.

“Emily, did Daniel ever tell you why he was so interested in marrying you so quickly?””

My stomach tightened.

I thought about our first year together.

The constant compliments.

The sudden proposal.

The way he always talked about “building a family.””

I thought it was love.

But suddenly, memories looked different.

Robert handed me another paper.

“This shows Daniel attempted to change ownership rights after your wedding.””

I felt dizzy.

“You tried to take my house?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“No. That’s not what happened.””

“Then what happened?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victoria answered for him.

“Emily, you need to understand something.””

I looked at her.

She smiled slightly.

“You were never really part of this family.””

The words landed harder than the slap.

Robert’s expression changed.

“Victoria.””

But she continued.

“You were useful.””

The room went silent.

My fingers tightened around the documents.

Then Robert pulled out one final piece of paper.

His face became serious.

“Emily,” he said, “there is something else you need to see.””

He turned the page toward me.

And at the top was Daniel’s signature.

May you like

Along with a date.

Three months before our wedding.
