Chapter 6: The Truth Daniel Was Hiding
Daniel stood in the doorway of the nursery, his face pale under the soft yellow light.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
The only sound was the quiet hum of the baby monitor sitting on the shelf.
A room designed for new beginnings suddenly felt like the place where everything I believed about my marriage had died.
“What is the worst part?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at the floor.
That hurt more than anger would have.
Because a guilty person looks away.
A person who has nothing to hide looks you in the eyes.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
He swallowed.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
I laughed quietly.
“You slapped me?””
“No.””
“You let your mother slap me.””
His face tightened.
“You think I don’t know that?””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
Silence.
I held up the letter.
“My grandmother knew about your family. My mother knew about your family. Everyone knew except me.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
He stopped.
That was his answer.
I looked down at the papers scattered across the bed.
Old contracts.
Property records.
Letters.
A history I had never been allowed to see.
“What was my mother involved in?”” I asked.
Daniel sat on the edge of the chair.
“When your mother and my father started working together, they created a company.””
“My mother and your father?””
He nodded.
“Years ago. Before I was old enough to understand.””
I stared at him.
“My father-in-law worked with my mother?””
“Yes.””
“And your mother?””
His jaw tightened.
“She joined later.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because my mother always believed your mother had something that belonged to her.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
“The controlling shares.””
I looked at the documents again.
The words suddenly made sense.
My grandmother wasn’t talking about money.
She was talking about power.
“Your family wanted my inheritance.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
I stared at him.
“Then how was it supposed to happen?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“Daniel.””
His eyes met mine.
And for once, he looked afraid.
“You were supposed to sign over control after we got married.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I had been punched.
“You planned this?””
“No.””
“You just admitted it.””
“I was pressured.””
“By who?””
His silence lasted too long.
“Your mother-in-law?””
He nodded.
I stepped back.
Five years.
Five years of birthdays.
Anniversaries.
Late-night conversations.
All of it suddenly felt like a performance.
“Did you ever love me?””
Daniel looked crushed.
“Yes.””
The answer came too quickly.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know if I believe anything you say anymore.””
He stood.
“Emily, I did love you.””
“But you still chose them.””
He had no response.
Because he knew.
I looked at my wedding photo on the dresser.
Me smiling.
Daniel smiling.
Two people pretending they were standing on solid ground.
But underneath us was a trap.
“What happens now?”” he asked.
I looked at him.
“Now I find out everything you hid.””
He stepped forward.
“Emily, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“My mother won’t stop.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“She has spent years trying to get those documents.””
“Why?””
“Because they prove something.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“That my father betrayed her.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“My father transferred control of the company after realizing what my mother was doing.””
“What was she doing?””
His eyes met mine.
“She was stealing from the company.””
I froze.
“You’re saying your mother was a criminal?””
“I’m saying she was desperate.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked away.
“My father found out she had been moving money.””
The room felt smaller.
“And you knew?””
“I found out recently.””
“Recently?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
He hesitated.
“Three months ago.””
Three months.
The exact time everything changed.
The time Daniel suddenly became distant.
The time he started coming home late.
The time his mother started visiting more often.
I whispered:
“You knew three months ago, and you still stayed?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I thought I could fix it.””
I stared at him.
“You didn’t want to fix anything.””
He looked at me.
“You wanted to protect yourself.””
Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Emily Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Michael Reed. I’m your grandmother’s estate investigator.””
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately went pale.
“How do you know Daniel is there?””
A pause.
Then the man said:
“Because he’s not the only one who knows where you live.””
My blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?””
The man lowered his voice.
“Emily, you need to leave your house immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because someone broke into your grandmother’s storage unit tonight.””
I gripped the phone.
“What was inside?””
Silence.
Then:
“The original documents proving your mother owned the company.””
I looked at Daniel.
May you like
And he whispered:
“My mother found them.””
