Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Left Behind
For twenty-five years, everyone believed my mother left me an inheritance.
Money.
Property.
Shares.
But nobody understood what she had really left.
A choice.
A responsibility.
A truth.
Michael explained everything in Robert’s study.
“My mother created something,” I said.
“Yes,” Michael replied.
“A technology?””
He nodded.
“She developed a medical device before her death.””
I looked at the documents.
“What kind?””
“One that could detect early-stage diseases faster than existing methods.””
I stared.
“She was trying to save lives.””
“Yes.””
“And James Whitmore wanted it.””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Robert sat in the corner, looking defeated.
“My wife didn’t understand what she was stealing.””
I looked at him.
“She understood.””
He lowered his head.
“She wanted control.””
Michael nodded.
“James convinced her the patent could make them rich.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
He swallowed.
“I was never supposed to be involved.””
“But you were.””
“Yes.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the world looked normal.
People driving.
People walking.
People living ordinary lives.
My life had changed completely in one Thanksgiving night.
“I need to ask something.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Why did James wait so long?””
Michael answered.
“Because he needed access.””
“To what?””
“To you.””
A chill moved through me.
“He needed me to sign.””
“Yes.””
“Marriage gave him a connection.””
“Yes.””
“And the baby?””
Nobody answered.
I turned.
“The baby gave him another reason.””
Robert looked horrified.
“Emily.””
I shook my head.
“No. I understand now.””
They didn’t want my child.
They wanted control over my family.
Over my name.
Over everything my mother protected.
My phone rang.
James Whitmore.
I stared at the screen.
Everyone became silent.
I answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
“Emily.””
I hated how easily he said my name.
“You’ve caused a lot of problems.””
I walked away from the others.
“You tried to steal from me.””
“No.””
He laughed softly.
“I tried to recover what your mother stole from me.””
“My mother stole nothing.””
“You don’t know the truth.””
“I know enough.””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother was going to destroy everything.””
“My mother was exposing criminals.””
“You sound just like her.””
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
“You knew her.””
“I knew her very well.””
My grip tightened.
“What happened that night?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“She made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“She chose you.””
My breath caught.
“What does that mean?””
James continued.
“She had the opportunity to save herself.””
I froze.
“But she didn’t.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew they would come after you next.””
My eyes filled.
For the first time, I heard the truth from someone who hated her.
My mother sacrificed herself.
James lowered his voice.
“You have something I need, Emily.””
“I have nothing for you.””
“You have the final access key.””
I frowned.
“What key?””
He laughed.
“Your mother hid it somewhere only you would find.””
I thought about the blue folder.
The letters.
The documents.
“What do you want?””
“I want you to bring it to me.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Then I’ll take it another way.””
The call ended.
Seconds later, Michael’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He lowered the phone.
“James filed an emergency lawsuit.””
My heart sank.
“For what?””
Michael looked at me.
“Claiming Emily Carter is mentally unfit to control her inheritance.””
I stared.
“He’s trying to take everything.””
May you like
Michael nodded.
“And the hearing is tomorrow morning.””
