Chapter 3: The Husband I Didn’t Know
I stared at the signature.
Daniel Carter.
The same name that appeared beside mine on our marriage certificate.
The same hand that held mine when we promised forever.
The same man who looked at me tonight and told me I needed to learn my place.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Dad is twisting things.””
Robert shook his head.
“No. I’m showing her the truth.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like Emily is innocent.””
I turned toward her.
“Innocent of what?””
She looked almost offended.
“As if you didn’t manipulate Daniel.””
I laughed softly.
The sound surprised even me.
“Manipulate him?””
I looked around the room.
“For five years, I paid bills when he couldn’t.””
Daniel looked down.
“For three years, I covered his credit cards.””
His head lifted.
“Emily—”
“No. Let me finish.””
My voice was shaking, but I didn’t stop.
“I worked extra shifts because you said we were building a future.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You offered.””
“I offered because I loved you.””
The room became quiet.
Robert watched his son carefully.
“You never told her?””
Daniel said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Robert took the document from the table.
“Daniel signed an agreement acknowledging that Emily’s assets were separate property.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
Daniel finally spoke.
“I knew.””
The honesty hurt.
Not because I didn’t expect it.
Because I did.
A part of me had always known.
I just didn’t want to admit it.
“So all those conversations about our future…” I whispered.
Daniel sighed.
“Emily, don’t make this dramatic.””
I looked at him.
“Dramatic?””
I lifted my burned hand.
“Is this dramatic too?””
He looked away.
That was the moment my heart stopped hoping.
Robert moved closer.
“There’s more.””
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
“No,” Robert said.
His voice was firm.
“She deserves to know.””
He pulled out a small envelope hidden inside the larger one.
“I found this when reviewing the family accounts.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What did you find?””
Robert looked at his son.
“Payments.””
He handed me the papers.
I scanned the pages.
At first, I didn’t understand.
Then I saw the dates.
The amounts.
The names.
My stomach dropped.
“What is this?””
Robert answered.
“Your husband has been transferring money to an account controlled by his mother.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
“That’s a lie.””
Robert looked at her.
“Is it?””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why would you send her my money?””
“It wasn’t your money.””
My eyes burned.
“You just admitted it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I was trying to protect our family.””
I shook my head.
“No. You were protecting yourself.””
The baby moved inside me.
A reminder that I wasn’t alone.
That I had someone who needed me.
Robert quietly said, “Emily, I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“Why are you sorry?””
His expression became heavy.
“Because I should have shown you this sooner.””
That confused me.
“Sooner?””
He looked toward Victoria.
Then Daniel.
“I suspected something was wrong before your wedding.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
Robert took a breath.
“Daniel didn’t marry you because he wanted a wife.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Then why?””
Robert looked at the papers in my hand.
“Because he believed your grandmother left you more than money.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“Emily, your grandmother didn’t just leave you an inheritance.””
May you like
He pointed to another document.
“She left you ownership of something your husband’s family has been trying to find for years.””
