Chapter 8: The Father-in-Law’s Secret

I left the hospital without finishing my appointment.

The doctor’s concerned voice followed me into the hallway.

“Emily, you need to sit down.””

But I couldn’t.

Not after what Victoria said.

Not after she planted that impossible thought in my head.

Robert.

The man who defended me.

The man who revealed the truth.

The man who looked like the only person on my side.

Could he have been hiding something too?

When I arrived home, Robert was already there.

He stood in the living room holding a folder.

His expression told me he knew.

“You saw Victoria.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stopped.

“How?””

“She called me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course she did.””

Robert sighed.

“Emily, before you ask, yes. I knew your mother.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew her.””

“Yes.””

“And you were the last person to see her alive?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The hesitation.

The pain.

The secret.

“I knew she was going to leave.””

I stared.

“Leave?””

“She discovered what my wife had done.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Robert looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

That shocked me.

“You?””

He nodded.

“I spent my life believing I could control every problem.””

He looked at the floor.

“I couldn’t.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened that night?””

Robert took a long breath.

“Your mother came to my office.””

“Why?””

“She had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Victoria had been moving company funds.””

I remembered Daniel’s words.

“She was stealing.””

“Yes.””

“What did my mother do?””

“She wanted to expose her.””

“And you stopped her?””

Robert looked at me.

“No.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I helped her.””

I didn’t expect that.

“What?””

“I promised your mother I would protect you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“But she died.””

“Yes.””

The word hung between us.

“I was supposed to drive her home that night.””

My heart raced.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Robert looked at the folder in his hands.

“Because Victoria called me.””

Silence.

“She said Daniel had been hurt.””

I frowned.

“You left my mother because your son needed you?””

Robert nodded.

“When I returned, your mother was gone.””

“And then the accident happened.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Do you believe she was murdered?””

Robert looked at me.

“I know she was.””

The room stopped.

“How?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A car.

A damaged vehicle.

And a handwritten note.

“I found this years later.””

I looked closer.

The handwriting.

My mother’s.

“What does it say?””

Robert handed it to me.

I read the words.

If anything happens to me, do not trust Victoria.

My hands trembled.

Robert whispered:

“Your mother knew.””

I looked up.

“Then why did you let me marry Daniel?””

His face collapsed.

That question hurt him.

Because he knew he deserved it.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But later?””

“I tried to warn you.””

“When?””

“Your wedding day.””

I remembered.

Robert pulled me aside before the ceremony.

He told me:

“Marriage is about trust. Make sure the person beside you deserves yours.””

I thought it was a normal fatherly speech.

I didn’t know it was a warning.

“I failed you,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I did.””

For the first time, I saw Robert not as a powerful businessman.

But as a broken man carrying years of guilt.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Emily?””

His voice sounded panicked.

“What happened?””

“You need to come home.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother is here.””

I froze.

Robert grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Don’t go.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because Victoria never visits without a plan.””

A loud crash came through the phone.

I heard Daniel shout.

Then silence.

“Daniel?””

May you like

No answer.

The call ended.
