Chapter 11: The Name Written on the Letter

I stared at the name until the letters blurred.

My hands started shaking.

Not because I didn’t recognize it.

Because I did.

Robert Carter.

My father-in-law.

The man who stood beside me when everyone else sat silently.

The man who told me he was sorry.

The man who said he failed my mother.

I read the line again.

The person who knows the entire truth about your mother’s death is still alive.

Underneath it:

Robert Carter.

I dropped the letter.

Daniel immediately picked it up.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

He read it.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“You knew he was hiding something.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me trust him?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Emily, I didn’t know this.””

I walked past him.

Downstairs.

Robert was standing in the living room.

Victoria was gone.

Only Robert remained.

The man who had spent the last two days presenting himself as my protector.

He looked at my face.

And he knew.

“You found the letter.””

I stopped.

“You knew about it?””

Robert didn’t move.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“How long?””

“Since your grandmother gave it to me.””

My chest tightened.

“She gave it to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Robert looked devastated.

“Because she wanted me to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?””

I held up the letter.

“Your name is on it.””

His eyes lowered.

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Robert sat down slowly.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not wealthy.

Just tired.

“I didn’t kill your mother.””

The way he said it made me believe he had rehearsed those words a thousand times.

“But you know who did.””

Silence.

Finally, he nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Robert looked toward the window.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand what happened that night.””

“I’m done waiting.””

“I know.””

He took a breath.

“Your mother discovered Victoria had been moving company money. But she also discovered something worse.””

“What?””

Robert looked at me.

“She discovered Victoria wasn’t acting alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who was helping her?””

Robert’s eyes moved toward Daniel.

My husband froze.

“No.””

Robert nodded.

“Daniel was involved.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked horrified.

“That’s not true.””

“You were young,” Robert said.

“But you knew.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I knew my mother was angry. I didn’t know she would…”

His voice disappeared.

I stared.

“You knew something was happening.””

Daniel looked broken.

“I was nineteen.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

Robert continued.

“Your mother confronted Victoria and Daniel.””

My stomach twisted.

“Daniel was there?””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Robert’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother left my office alive.””

I waited.

“What happened after?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“Victoria followed her.””

“And you?””

“I followed them.””

The room went silent.

“You followed them?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I realized too late that my wife was capable of something I never imagined.””

My breathing became shallow.

“Then why does everyone think you were the last person with her?””

“Because I was.””

The answer hit me.

Robert continued.

“I reached the accident scene before the police.””

My eyes widened.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Did you see her?””

His face broke.

“Yes.””

“Was she alive?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The room felt frozen.

“She was alive?””

Robert nodded.

“She grabbed my hand.””

I covered my mouth.

“What did she say?””

His eyes filled.

“She said, ‘Don’t let them take Emily.’”

A tear slipped down my cheek.

My mother.

A woman I barely remembered.

Still trying to protect me.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Robert looked ashamed.

“Because Victoria threatened Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She told me if I exposed her, she would make sure Daniel went to prison.””

I turned toward my husband.

Daniel looked away.

“She had evidence.””

Robert nodded.

“Enough to ruin him.””

I whispered:

“So you protected your son.””

“Yes.””

“And abandoned my mother.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The truth hurt.

But somehow, it was better than another lie.

Then my phone rang.

Michael.

I answered.

“Emily, we found something.””

“What?””

“Your grandmother left one final document.””

I looked at Robert.

“Where?””

Michael hesitated.

“It was hidden in the Carter family vault.””

My heart stopped.

“Why would my grandmother hide something there?””

His voice lowered.

“Because she knew someone in the family would eventually betray you.””

A pause.

Then:

“Emily, the document names the person who ordered your mother’s death.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

May you like

Michael answered:

“The same person who is trying to take your company today.””
