Chapter 4: The Secret Behind My Grandmother’s Will

I couldn’t speak.

My grandmother.

The woman who raised me after my parents died.

The woman who always told me, “Never let anyone convince you that kindness means weakness.””

I remembered those words now.

Standing in a dining room where everyone I trusted had betrayed me.

“What did she leave me?”” I asked.

Robert looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked terrified.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel was never afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing something else.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Robert, you are making this sound worse than it is.””

“Because it is worse.””

“You don’t understand the situation.””

Robert laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“I understand perfectly.””

I looked between them.

“What are you hiding?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

The sound echoed through the room.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something inside me told me not to.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Emily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rachel Miller. I was your grandmother’s attorney.””

My entire body went still.

“My grandmother’s attorney?””

“Yes. I’ve been trying to reach you for months.””

I looked at Robert.

He nodded slowly.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

Rachel continued.

“Emily, I’m calling because recent events have triggered a condition in your grandmother’s estate.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What condition?””

A pause.

Then:

“The transfer of control.””

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“Emily, hang up.””

Everyone turned toward him.

I stared.

“What?””

He looked desperate.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Rachel’s voice became sharper.

“Emily, is Daniel Carter with you?””

The room froze.

“How do you know his name?””

“Because your grandmother specifically mentioned him.””

My heart pounded.

“What did she say?””

Rachel was silent for a moment.

Then she answered.

“She said if Daniel ever tried to pressure you into signing anything, you needed to contact me immediately.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face lost all color.

Victoria whispered, “Impossible.””

Rachel continued.

“Emily, your grandmother knew someone might attempt to access the company shares she left you.””

“Company shares?””

I felt like the room was spinning.

Robert looked down.

“Now you understand.””

I turned to him.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“What possibility?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Your grandmother owned a controlling interest in a private company.””

I stared.

“That can’t be right.””

“It is.””

Rachel continued.

“Your grandmother wanted you to have full control when you turned thirty.””

I remembered my grandmother’s final birthday gift.

A small wooden box.

Inside was a note.

I was too young to understand it.

I kept it because I thought it was sentimental.

The note said:

“Some people will love you for what you have. Make sure you know the difference.””

My hands trembled.

Daniel walked closer.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“No. I’m finally understanding.””

Victoria suddenly grabbed her purse.

“We should leave.””

Robert blocked the doorway.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You’re not leaving until she hears everything.””

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Dad!””

Robert turned toward him.

“You should have thought about the consequences before betraying your wife.””

Rachel spoke again.

“Emily, I need you to check something.””

“What?””

“Look inside the blue folder your grandmother gave you before she passed away.””

I frowned.

The blue folder.

I hadn’t opened it in years.

It was stored in my bedroom closet.

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Because inside that folder is proof that your husband’s family has been trying to take what belongs to you.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“Emily… please don’t open that folder.””
