Chapter 7: The Secret Richard Buried

The message remained on Charles’s phone screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The words stared back at us like a threat carved into stone.

*Ask Eleanor why Richard never told her the truth about Claire’s birth.*

My daughter looked at me.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

With confusion.

And that somehow hurt more.

“Mom?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because there was a question buried beneath that message.

A question I had avoided for years.

A question I thought was too painful to reopen.

Charles lowered his phone.

“Eleanor.””

I looked at him.

“Did Richard know something about Claire’s birth?””

The room felt smaller.

The old office walls seemed to close around us.

I walked toward Richard’s desk and placed my hand on the wood.

The same desk where he used to work late into the night.

The same desk where he kissed my forehead and promised me we would grow old together.

“There is something I never told Claire.””

My daughter stiffened.

“Mom?””

I looked at her.

“I wasn’t ready.””

Her expression changed.

“Ready for what?””

I took a slow breath.

“Before you were born, Richard and I had trouble having children.””

Claire looked down.

She knew pieces of this story.

But not all of it.

“We tried for years,” I continued.

“Doctors told us it might never happen.””

Charles listened quietly.

“Then one day, Richard came home and told me there was another option.””

Claire frowned.

“What option?””

I swallowed.

“Adoption.””

The word hung in the air.

Claire stared at me.

“You adopted me?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

“I thought you knew.””

She shook her head slowly.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

“Because every time I asked about my birth, you told me I was your daughter.””

“You are.””

“I know that.””

Her voice cracked.

“But you never told me.””

I stepped closer.

“Claire, being your mother was never about biology.””

“That’s not what I’m asking.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m asking why everyone else knew something about me except me.””

I looked at Charles.

His face was filled with regret.

“Charles knew?””

He looked away.

“Richard told me.””

Claire stepped back.

“So my whole life was a secret?””

“No.””

I reached for her.

She moved away.

That small movement hurt more than anything Faith had done.

“You weren’t a secret,” I whispered.

“Then why did you hide it?””

I had no answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

And sometimes, when people are afraid of losing something precious, they make choices that hurt the very thing they are trying to protect.

Richard had always believed the truth could destroy people.

Maybe he was right.

Maybe he was wrong.

I opened the letter again.

There was another paragraph beneath the faded ink.

I had missed it before.

Eleanor,

Claire must never know until the time is right.

Her biological father is still looking for her.

My blood turned cold.

Claire saw my expression.

“What?””

I read the sentence again.

Biological father.

Looking for her.

Charles took the letter from my hand.

His face changed.

“This changes everything.””

I looked at him.

“Who was he?””

Charles didn’t answer.

“Charles.””

He slowly sat down.

“Richard believed Claire’s biological father was dangerous.””

“Who?””

Charles looked toward my daughter.

Then whispered:

“Daniel Cross.””

The room exploded into silence.

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

But the evidence was sitting in front of us.

The man who claimed to want the company.

The man who knew about the trust.

The man who knew Claire.

Her biological father.

Charles stood.

“Eleanor, Richard found out the truth shortly before his death.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

“Daniel confessed.””

“Why would he?””

“Because he wanted something.””

“What?””

Charles looked at Claire.

“You.””

My daughter’s face went pale.

I moved between them instinctively.

“You’re saying Daniel tried to take Claire?””

“Yes.””

The anger inside me burned hotter than it had in years.

Faith pushing me onto the lawn.

The cake.

The humiliation.

None of it mattered anymore.

This was about my daughter.

Someone had been hunting her.

Someone had been using her.

And I had spent ten years believing my greatest mistake was losing her.

I was wrong.

My greatest mistake was not looking deeper.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained.

“Mom.””

“What?””

“It’s Faith.””

Nobody spoke.

The phone continued ringing.

Charles looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

I stared at the screen.

Faith Delano.

The woman who started everything.

The woman connected to Daniel.

The woman who wanted something from me.

I pressed accept.

“Hello?””

Faith’s voice came immediately.

“You finally know, don’t you?””

I tightened my grip.

“Know what?””

A small laugh.

“Who Claire really belongs to.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Faith continued.

“You spent years pretending you were her mother.””

My jaw tightened.

“She is my daughter.””

Faith laughed.

“You really believe that?””

I heard movement behind her.

Someone else was there.

A man.

Then Faith said:

“Ask Daniel about the night Richard died.””

The call ended.

And for the first time in ten years…

I wondered if my husband’s death had been murder.
