Chapter 15: The Truth Beneath the Lies
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But in those seconds, everything changed.
Richard pulled me behind him.
The same instinct he had always had.
Protect.
Shield.
Save.
But this time, I didn’t let him.
I stepped beside him.
“I don’t need you to hide me anymore.””
He looked at me.
Pain crossed his face.
“I know.””
The emergency lights flickered on.
Charles moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
Richard stopped him.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“They want us together.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Who?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“The person who has been cleaning up our mistakes for years.””
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Someone wasn’t trying to hide.
They wanted us to know they were coming.
The door opened.
And Victoria walked in.
Nobody spoke.
She looked at Richard.
Not surprised.
Not afraid.
Just tired.
“So you finally came back.””
Richard stared at her.
“Victoria.””
I looked between them.
“You knew.””
Victoria looked at me.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew he was alive?””
“Yes.””
The betrayal hurt.
Another one.
Another person who knew.
Another person who let me suffer.
“How long?””
“Ten years.””
I closed my eyes.
Ten years.
Everyone had known except me.
Victoria stepped forward.
“But you don’t understand.””
I laughed bitterly.
“No. I understand perfectly.””
She looked at Richard.
“You promised me.””
Richard looked away.
“What promise?””
I looked at him.
“What promise?””
Victoria answered.
“That he would tell you the truth.””
Silence.
Richard looked guilty.
“I was trying to find proof.””
“For ten years?””
“I was trying to keep Claire safe.””
Victoria shook her head.
“You always use that excuse.””
The anger between them felt older than any of us.
Richard looked at her.
“You worked with Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“You helped him attack Eleanor.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“I wanted the truth.””
“You wanted revenge.””
She didn’t deny it.
Then Claire stepped forward.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Victoria looked at her.
The anger disappeared.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would choose her.””
Claire looked confused.
“Choose who?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Eleanor.””
My heart broke.
Because suddenly I understood.
Everyone had been fighting over Claire.
A child who had only ever wanted honesty.
Richard.
Victoria.
Faith.
Daniel.
All of them claimed they were protecting her.
And all of them hurt her.
Then Richard opened the folder again.
“There’s one thing you all need to see.””
He removed a final document.
A birth record.
Claire took it.
Her eyes scanned the page.
Then widened.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What is it?””
She looked at me.
“This isn’t right.””
Richard took the paper.
“What?””
Claire pointed.
“My birth date.””
Richard froze.
“What about it?””
She looked at him.
“It’s wrong.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Richard.
“What does that mean?””
He stared at the document.
Then slowly sat down.
“No.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Richard?””
He looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“Dad, what?””
Richard looked at her.
Then at me.
Then at the document.
And whispered:
“Claire…”
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Your birth records were changed.””
Nobody moved.
Richard continued.
“Someone altered your identity before I ever met you.””
I felt dizzy.
“Then whose child is she?””
Richard looked toward the door.
Toward the darkness outside.
And said:
“The person who changed those records wanted us to believe Claire was someone she wasn’t.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t Claire’s.
It was coming from inside the room.
From one of the boxes.
Richard opened it slowly.
Inside was an old phone.
Still active.
The screen lit up.
One message appeared.
*You’re looking in the wrong place.*
Then another line appeared.
A name.
May you like
The name of the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
*Eleanor Whitmore.*
