Chapter 14: The Husband Who Disappeared
Richard stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Real.
Breathing.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The man I buried.
The man I mourned.
The man I thought I would never see again.
Was standing ten feet away.
“Eleanor.””
My name sounded strange coming from him.
Like a memory returning.
I couldn’t speak.
Claire moved first.
She stepped forward.
“Dad?””
Richard looked at her.
And the expression on his face destroyed me.
Because he looked like a father seeing his child for the first time.
“I’m sorry.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“No, you don’t get to say that.””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“Yes.””
“You let Mom believe you were dead.””
“Yes.””
Her tears fell.
“Why?””
Richard looked at her.
“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was the same excuse everyone used.
Protecting.
Saving.
Shielding.
All words that had destroyed us.
I stepped forward.
“Richard.””
He looked at me.
The pain in his eyes was real.
But so was my anger.
“You watched me suffer.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“You watched me bury you.””
“Yes.””
“You watched our daughter hate herself for losing her family.””
His face broke.
“Eleanor…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I need to know why.””
Richard looked around the room.
At the boxes.
The documents.
The secrets.
Then he said:
“Because Daniel Cross tried to kill me.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at him.
“You’re saying Daniel caused the accident?””
“Yes.””
Charles stepped forward.
“Then why did you disappear?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because someone else was helping him.””
The room went quiet.
Again.
Always another secret.
Always another layer.
“Who?”” I asked.
Richard looked at me.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“You had ten years to figure it out.””
“I spent those years trying.””
My anger softened slightly.
Not enough.
But slightly.
Richard walked toward the table.
He picked up the journal.
“When Daniel discovered Claire existed, everything changed.””
Claire looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you kept it from me.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
“I should have told you.””
Claire looked away.
“You should have.””
Richard nodded.
“I know.””
I watched my daughter.
For years, she wanted answers.
Now she had them.
But answers did not erase pain.
They only explained it.
Richard looked at me.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because every time I got close, someone moved first.””
“Who?””
Richard hesitated.
Then looked at Charles.
My heart sank.
“What?””
Charles looked shocked.
“Me?””
Richard nodded.
“You.””
The room froze.
I looked between them.
“No.””
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“Charles was not working with Daniel.””
Charles looked relieved.
Then Richard continued.
“But he was hiding something.””
Everyone looked at Charles.
“What?””
Richard walked to the boxes.
He pulled out a folder.
Inside were old documents.
“I found these three months after my disappearance.””
He placed them on the table.
My name was on the first page.
Then another name.
Victoria.
Then another.
Faith.
And finally…
Charles.
I looked at him.
“What did you do?””
Charles looked devastated.
“I protected Richard.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Charles.
“You protected the truth.””
The words landed heavily.
Charles closed his eyes.
“I made a promise.””
“To who?””
He didn’t answer.
Richard did.
“To my father.””
My eyes widened.
“Your father?””
Richard nodded.
“The man who started all of this.””
I looked at the documents.
The family secrets.
The lies.
The betrayals.
They went back further than I imagined.
“How far does this go?””
Richard looked at me.
“Farther than any of us knew.””
Then the storage room lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed us.
A crash came from outside.
Someone had entered.
Richard grabbed my hand.
May you like
And whispered:
“They found us.””
