Chapter 18: The Truth That Started It All
Nobody slept that night.
How could we?
A thirty-year-old letter had appeared in front of us.
A letter warning about Claire before Claire even existed.
Nothing made sense.
Yet everything was connected.
Rebecca sat across from us under guard.
For the first time, she looked less powerful.
More like someone carrying a burden.
Richard stood near the window.
He had barely spoken since reading the letter.
I understood.
Because every truth we uncovered destroyed another piece of the life we thought we knew.
Claire sat beside me.
She held my hand.
A small gesture.
But after everything, it meant everything.
“Read it,” she said.
I looked at the letter.
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
Eleanor,
If you have this letter, then the people who changed your life have finally found you.
You do not know me yet.
But I know you.
I know what was taken from you.
I know what they made you forget.
I stopped.
Forget?
I looked at Richard.
“What does this mean?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
I continued reading.
Your daughter is the key.
Not because of her blood.
Because of what she carries.
My heart tightened.
Claire looked nervous.
“What do I carry?””
The next line answered.
The truth.
I lowered the letter.
“That’s it?””
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s all the original letter contained.””
I looked at her.
“You knew about this?””
“Yes.””
“And you waited until now?””
“I was waiting for the right moment.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone always says that.””
Rebecca looked down.
“Because the wrong moment gets people killed.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“You know who killed your mother.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Yes.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“The Delano family.””
Charles stepped back.
“No.””
Rebecca turned toward him.
“You know it’s true.””
Charles looked devastated.
“I was a child.””
“But your family wasn’t.””
The room went silent.
Rebecca continued.
“Thirty years ago, the Delanos wanted control of a financial empire.””
Richard looked at her.
“Whitmore Holdings.””
“Yes.””
She pointed toward me.
“And Eleanor was the obstacle.””
I felt numb.
“Why me?””
“Because your father built the original company.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
Rebecca nodded.
“You inherited it.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You were told you were just a survivor.””
She stepped closer.
“But you were the rightful owner.””
Charles whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Is it?””
She placed another document down.
This time, an old legal record.
My eyes moved across it.
My father’s name.
My mother’s name.
The company.
Everything.
I had not married into wealth.
I had been born into it.
Richard looked at me.
“Eleanor…”
I couldn’t hear anything else.
My entire identity was changing.
The quiet woman who spent decades proving herself.
The woman Faith pushed onto the lawn.
The woman everyone underestimated.
I had never been powerless.
I had just forgotten.
Then Claire noticed something.
“Mom.””
I looked at her.
She pointed at the letter.
“There’s another page.””
I turned it over.
A second message appeared.
Not written by the same person.
Different handwriting.
Newer.
Three words.
*He is back.*
Richard stepped closer.
“Who?””
The answer was underneath.
A name.
One we all recognized.
A name that had haunted every chapter of this nightmare.
Daniel Cross.
But beneath Daniel’s name was another sentence.
May you like
And this one made my blood run cold.
*Daniel was never the enemy.*
