Chapter 6: The Man Who Never Died

For ten years, I believed my husband died in an accident.

For ten years, I visited his grave.

For ten years, I told myself that grief was the price of loving someone deeply.

Now I stood in his old office holding a letter that suggested everything I knew was a lie.

Charles watched me carefully.

Claire stood beside me.

Neither of them spoke.

They were waiting.

Waiting for me to break.

But I had spent my entire life surviving moments that should have destroyed me.

I unfolded the paper.

Richard’s handwriting appeared beneath the first sentence.

Eleanor,

If you are reading this, Daniel Cross has returned.

My breath caught.

I looked at Charles.

He looked away.

I continued.

Daniel is not who he claims to be.

The man you trusted is the man who betrayed us.

My hands shook.

Richard continued.

He knows about the Whitmore Foundation. He knows about the trust. He knows about Claire.

I stopped reading.

Claire noticed.

“What?””

I handed her the page.

She read silently.

Then her face changed.

“He knew?””

I nodded.

“He knew someone was coming after us.””

Charles walked toward the window.

“Richard suspected Daniel was stealing from the company.””

I looked at him.

“And you knew?””

“I suspected.””

My anger rose.

“You suspected my husband’s closest friend was betraying him, and you said nothing?””

Charles looked at me.

“Richard asked me not to.””

“That was a mistake.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

He didn’t defend himself.

He accepted it.

That made it harder to stay angry.

I looked back at the letter.

There was more.

Daniel has help inside the family.

I stopped.

Inside the family.

Claire read over my shoulder.

“Who?””

The next line was smudged.

Almost unreadable.

But one word remained.

A name.

Faith.

My daughter stepped back.

“Faith?””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

But deep down, I knew.

It made perfect sense.

People don’t suddenly become cruel.

They inherit it.

They learn it.

They are taught it.

Then my phone rang.

Again.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Eleanor.””

I froze.

There was no mistaking it.

Daniel Cross.

“Where are you?””

He laughed softly.

“You always did ask the wrong questions first.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I let everyone believe many things.””

My voice became cold.

“Why?””

“Because people protect the truth when they think it’s gone.””

Charles stepped closer.

I put the phone on speaker.

Daniel continued.

“I have to admit, Eleanor, I didn’t expect you to fight back.””

“You underestimated me.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

“I underestimated how much you still cared.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“The company.””

I laughed once.

“You think you can take what Richard and I built?””

“I don’t think.””

His voice became sharper.

“I know.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Daniel?””

A silence.

Then he spoke.

“Claire.””

She looked sick.

“You used me.””

“No.””

“You brought me there.””

“I protected you.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You kidnapped me.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Eleanor, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Richard wasn’t trying to protect you from me.””

My heart slowed.

“What are you saying?””

“He was trying to protect you from someone much closer.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Claire.

Then Charles.

Daniel continued.

“The person who destroyed your family has been standing beside you all along.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire whispered:

“Mom…”

I turned toward her.

Her eyes were full of fear.

Because she had heard the same thing I had.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

And then Charles’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Slowly, he turned the phone toward us.

A message.
