Chapter 19: The Enemy We Never Saw

The room went silent after those four words.

*Daniel was never the enemy.*

For years, every path had led back to him.

Daniel Cross.

The man who betrayed Richard.

The man who disappeared.

The man who threatened our family.

The man everyone blamed.

But now, after thirty years of secrets, we discovered the truth.

He might have been only a piece of the puzzle.

Richard took the letter from my hand.

His face was unreadable.

“No.””

Rebecca watched him carefully.

“You still believe he was responsible.””

“He was.””

“Yes.””

Her answer surprised us.

“But he wasn’t the one in control.””

Charles looked at her.

“Then who was?””

Rebecca looked around the room.

At all of us.

Then her eyes stopped on me.

“The person who knew everyone’s weakness.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward the old photograph on the table.

The picture of me as a child.

The picture of the girl beside me.

My supposed sister.

“She knew everything.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Your mother.””

The room froze.

Again.

I hated that word.

Again.

Another impossible truth.

“My mother is dead.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

My voice became sharp.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I have spent my entire life burying people who weren’t dead, trusting people who betrayed me, and believing stories that were never true.””

I pointed at Rebecca.

“I need facts.””

For the first time, Rebecca looked afraid.

“You want facts?””

“Yes.””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small recorder.

“This belonged to your mother.””

I stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

“She gave it to Daniel before she disappeared.””

Richard took a step forward.

“Why would Daniel have it?””

“Because he was trying to expose her.””

That sentence changed everything.

Rebecca pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice.

Older.

Familiar.

My entire body froze.

Because even after decades, I recognized it.

“Eleanor.””

My mother.

My dead mother.

My knees almost gave out.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Mom.””

I listened.

“If you are hearing this, then I failed.””

A pause.

“I tried to protect you from the truth.””

My eyes filled.

“I tried to give you a normal life.””

The recording continued.

“But your father built something powerful, and powerful things attract dangerous people.””

A sound of crying.

My mother.

“I made a mistake.””

Everyone listened.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

The recording stopped.

Only for a second.

Then a final sentence.

“Your sister survived.””

I looked at the photograph.

My hands trembled.

“My sister?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She never died.””

“Where is she?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“That is the question.””

Then the lights went out.

A crash echoed downstairs.

Everyone reacted immediately.

Richard moved toward me.

Charles reached for his phone.

Claire grabbed my hand.

But Rebecca whispered:

“He’s here.””

A shadow moved outside the window.

Richard looked.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He stepped closer to the glass.

“It can’t be.””

A figure stood outside.

Watching us.

Waiting.

Richard opened the door.

“Daniel!””

The man stepped into the light.

Older.

Changed.

But alive.

Daniel Cross.

He looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at him.

“You’re sorry?””

My voice shook.

“You destroyed our lives.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“Then tell me why.””

He looked toward the photograph.

“Because your sister asked me to.””

Nobody moved.

I felt the world shift.

“My sister?””

Daniel nodded.

“She has been controlling everything.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Who is she?””

Daniel looked at me.

And said:

“The woman you trusted more than anyone.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Daniel whispered:

“Victoria Hale.””

The room exploded into chaos.

Victoria.

My best friend.

Claire’s biological mother.

The woman who claimed she wanted justice.

The woman who had been hurting us all along.

Daniel looked at me.

“She wasn’t trying to punish Richard.””

He paused.

“She was trying to replace him.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked toward the darkness outside.

“Ask her yourself.””

A car door slammed outside.

Everyone turned.

Victoria was gone.

On the table, where she had been standing moments earlier, was a final note.

I picked it up.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*Come alone if you want to know why I chose you.*
