Chapter 13: The Man From the Grave
I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.
Richard.
My Richard.
Standing beneath a streetlamp.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
For ten years, I had placed flowers on his grave.
For ten years, I had whispered goodbye to a stone that carried his name.
Now a single image had shattered everything I believed.
Claire touched my arm.
“Mom.””
I couldn’t answer.
Because if Richard was alive, then every tear I cried had been for a lie.
Every lonely night.
Every birthday without him.
Every anniversary where I sat alone.
All of it.
A lie.
Charles took the phone from my hand.
“Where did this come from?””
I looked at the number.
Unknown.
“I don’t know.””
He examined the image carefully.
“This could be manipulated.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Everyone looked at me.
“I know him.””
I pointed at the screen.
“That’s Richard.””
Victoria stepped closer.
Her face was pale.
“If he’s alive…”
She couldn’t finish.
Because we all understood.
If Richard was alive, then he had left all of us behind.
I grabbed my coat.
“Where are you going?””
Claire stood.
“To find him.””
Charles shook his head.
“You don’t even know where that picture was taken.””
I looked at the message again.
Then I noticed something.
A reflection in the glass behind Richard.
A sign.
A few letters were visible.
I zoomed in.
“Wait.””
Everyone gathered around.
The sign was blurry.
But readable.
*HARBOR POINT STORAGE.*
Charles immediately recognized it.
“No.””
“What?””
His expression changed.
“That place was connected to Richard.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
Charles looked at me.
“Because that’s where he kept everything he didn’t want anyone to find.””
The drive there felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
The city moved outside the windows, completely unaware that my entire life had collapsed in a single afternoon.
Claire sat beside me.
She looked out the window.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel.””
I turned toward her.
“What do you mean?””
“If Dad is alive…”
She swallowed.
“I should be happy.””
“But?””
“But I’m angry.””
I understood.
Because I felt the same.
Love and betrayal could exist together.
That was the cruelest thing about family.
You could hate what someone did and still miss who they were.
When we arrived at Harbor Point Storage, the building looked abandoned.
Rust covered the gates.
The security lights flickered.
Charles used the key he had kept for ten years.
The lock opened.
Inside was a small storage room.
Boxes filled every corner.
Documents.
Photographs.
Old journals.
Everything Richard had hidden.
Claire picked up a photograph.
It showed Richard holding a baby.
Her.
She stared at it.
“He kept this?””
I nodded.
A small piece of my heart softened.
Because despite everything, he had loved her.
Then I found something.
A journal.
Richard’s handwriting.
The first page contained one sentence.
*If Eleanor finds this, it means I failed.*
My hands shook.
I opened it.
The entries were dated months before his supposed death.
Daniel is not the biggest threat.
Victoria is not the biggest threat.
I stopped.
Then continued.
The person I trusted most betrayed me.
Claire looked over my shoulder.
“Who?””
The next page was torn out.
I searched the box.
Nothing.
Someone had removed it.
Charles noticed another envelope beneath the journal.
My name was written on it.
Not Richard’s handwriting.
Someone else’s.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Eleanor,
You are closer than you think.
The person who has been protecting you has also been controlling the truth.
Ask Charles why he never told you about the second accident.
My heart sank.
“Second accident?””
Charles looked away.
I turned toward him.
“What does this mean?””
He didn’t answer.
“Charles.””
His face changed.
“I was hoping you would never find out.””
The room went silent.
“What happened?””
He looked at the floor.
“Richard’s car accident wasn’t the only accident that night.””
Claire frowned.
“What other accident?””
Charles took a breath.
“Mine.””
I stared at him.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I wasn’t supposed to survive.””
The words chilled me.
Before I could ask more, a sound came from the hallway.
A door opening.
Everyone turned.
A shadow appeared.
Then a familiar voice said:
“You were never meant to find this room.””
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because after ten years of believing he was dead…
I heard my husband’s voice.
