Chapter 9: The Brother Who Never Died
Nobody moved.
The knock came again.
Three slow taps against the front door.
Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Andrew is dead,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“Then why did you say his name?””
Her lips trembled.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stepped between us and the door.
“Stay back.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence told me enough.
“Daniel.””
His face tightened.
“There are things I didn’t tell you.””
I almost laughed.
Another secret.
Another person who thought they had the right to decide what I deserved to know.
The doorknob moved.
Everyone froze.
Then the door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older than the pictures.
Tired.
Different.
But impossible to mistake.
Claire covered her mouth.
“Andrew.””
The man looked at her.
“Hi, Claire.””
Her knees nearly gave out.
I couldn’t move.
The person I had believed was dead for ten years was standing in my living room.
The same living room where my entire world had fallen apart.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
“You knew.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
My anger returned.
“How long?””
“Since last year.””
I stared at him.
“Last year?””
Claire looked at Daniel in disbelief.
“You knew he was alive?””
Daniel nodded.
“I found him.””
Andrew stepped forward.
“I didn’t want anyone to know.””
I turned toward him.
“You didn’t want anyone to know?””
My voice shook.
“My wife spent ten years grieving you.””
Andrew looked down.
“I know.””
“You let her believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
I stepped closer.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
The words came out bitter.
“No choice. No choice. No choice.””
I pointed around the room.
“You all made choices. You just never chose me.””
Andrew accepted the anger without defending himself.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“I deserve that,” he said.
Claire stared at him through tears.
“Why?””
Andrew looked at his sister.
“Because if I came back, Robert would find Ethan.””
Daniel nodded.
“He was hiding.””
I looked at Andrew.
“You knew Robert was after him.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me raise him without knowing?””
Andrew’s eyes softened.
“No.””
He looked toward the stairs.
“I let the only person I trusted raise him.””
That stopped me.
I hated that part of me understood.
Andrew reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“This is why Robert took Ethan.””
I grabbed it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of a young Ethan.
But beside him was another picture.
A security camera image.
Robert.
Watching.
“He’s been monitoring Ethan for years,” Andrew said.
My stomach turned.
“How?””
“Because Robert was never just your business partner.””
Andrew looked at me.
“He was working against you from the beginning.””
I remembered every meeting.
Every conversation.
Every time Robert asked about my travel schedule.
“He knew when I was gone.””
Andrew nodded.
“He knew because he was trying to find the trust documents.””
I looked at Claire.
“And you had them.””
She lowered her head.
“I was trying to keep them hidden.””
Andrew sighed.
“I told her to wait until Marcus was ready.””
I turned sharply.
“Ready?””
Andrew looked at me.
“Ready to know that loving Ethan would put a target on your back.””
I said nothing.
Because that was the truth nobody wanted to admit.
I had thought being a father meant protecting Ethan from scraped knees and bad dreams.
I never imagined protecting him from people who wanted to own him.
My phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, Andrew stepped forward.
“Answer it.””
I looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
He nodded.
I pressed the button.
Robert’s voice came through.
“I’m impressed.””
I tightened my grip.
“Where is my son?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your son?””
I felt rage rising.
“He is my son.””
Robert laughed.
“That’s exactly why Andrew chose you.””
Andrew looked at the phone.
Robert continued.
“You all think you’re protecting Ethan. You don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
Robert’s voice became colder.
“Ethan knows where the original trust papers are.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked at Andrew.
“What does he mean?””
Andrew’s face changed.
“No.””
Robert laughed.
“You never told Marcus, did you?””
I felt my heart drop.
“Told me what?””
Andrew looked toward the stairs.
Then he whispered:
“Ethan saw something the night I disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Robert answered.
“The boy remembers everything.””
The call ended.
And suddenly, I understood.
Ethan wasn’t just the person everyone was protecting.
May you like
He was the one person who knew the truth.
And Robert had taken him because he believed an eight-year-old boy held the secret that could destroy him.
