Chapter 5: The Stranger’s Warning
The call ended before I could ask another question.
I stood there with the phone pressed against my ear, listening to nothing but silence.
The man was gone.
But his words stayed.
*Your wife was never the only person keeping secrets from you.*
I slowly lowered my phone.
Claire was staring at me.
“What did he say?””
I looked at her.
For a second, I wanted to believe she was just scared.
I wanted to believe she was still the woman I married.
But every time I looked at her, I saw another locked door.
Another hidden room.
Another truth waiting to hurt me.
“He said you weren’t the only one hiding things.””
Claire’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
And that was enough.
“Who was it?”” I asked.
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Marcus, we need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
“You show up at my house, tell me my son might be in danger, and now you want me to run?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I want you to keep Ethan alive.””
That stopped me.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I trusted those words.
I turned toward the house.
“Ethan.””
I walked inside.
The living room was exactly the same as before.
The balloons.
The cake.
The torn wrapping paper.
The toy car sitting on the floor.
A normal birthday scene that now felt like a lie.
Then I saw Ethan sitting on the stairs.
He had heard everything.
My heart sank.
“Buddy…”
He looked at me.
“Is Uncle Daniel a bad guy?””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Because I wasn’t sure.
Ethan looked down.
“Are you and Mom getting divorced?””
The question broke something inside me.
I sat beside him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because I wasn’t sure about anything anymore.
I pulled him into my arms.
“Listen to me. Nothing changes how much I love you. Nothing.””
His small voice came against my shoulder.
“Even if I’m not really yours?””
My chest tightened.
I pulled back.
“Who told you that?””
His eyes moved toward the floor.
“Nobody.””
“Ethan.””
He wiped his face.
“I heard Uncle Daniel.””
I looked toward the doorway.
Claire was standing there crying.
“Ethan…”
He looked at her.
“Mom, am I not Dad’s son?””
Claire collapsed emotionally.
“No. Baby, listen to me. He is your dad.””
I held Ethan’s hand.
“Blood doesn’t decide family.””
I looked directly at him.
“I chose you every day since you were born. I was there when you took your first steps. I was there when you learned to ride a bike. I was there when you got scared during storms.””
My voice cracked.
“That’s what a dad does.””
Ethan hugged me.
For the first time that night, I felt something other than anger.
Fear.
Fear of losing him.
A few minutes later, Daniel placed a folder on the kitchen table.
“We need to show you something.””
I didn’t move.
“What?””
“Andrew’s files.””
Claire looked nervous.
“Daniel…”
“No more secrets.””
She looked away.
I opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Newspaper articles.
And one picture that made me stop.
It showed Andrew standing beside another man.
A man I recognized.
My blood turned cold.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You know him?””
I stared at the photo.
“Yes.””
The man beside Andrew wasn’t a stranger.
He was someone I had met before.
Someone who had shaken my hand.
Someone who had smiled at my family.
“Who is he?”” Claire asked.
I slowly looked up.
“Robert.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Robert?””
I swallowed.
“Your husband’s business partner?””
Claire’s face went blank.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“Robert has worked with me for six years.””
Nobody spoke.
The person who might have been searching for Ethan wasn’t some unknown enemy.
He was someone who had been inside my life.
Someone who knew my schedule.
Someone who knew when I traveled.
Someone who knew when my house was empty.
Daniel picked up the photo.
“When was this taken?””
I checked the date.
My hands went cold.
“The same year Ethan was born.””
Claire whispered:
“No…”
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From the unknown number.
One sentence.
*Ask your wife what happened the night Ethan was born.*
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.

And for the first time, I wondered if the biggest secret in my marriage wasn’t about Daniel at all.
It was about the day my son entered this world.
