Chapter 6: The Night Ethan Was Born
The hospital hallway smelled like antiseptic and fear.
Ten years ago, I had walked through those doors believing I was about to become the happiest man alive.
I remembered every detail.
The vending machine near the elevator.
The uncomfortable plastic chairs.
The way my hands shook while waiting for the nurse to call my name.
I remembered Claire’s exhausted smile when I finally held our baby boy.
At least, I thought I remembered everything.
Now, standing in my kitchen with a stranger’s message glowing on my phone, I wondered how much of that night had been real.
I looked at Claire.
“Tell me.””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was going to tell you.””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s what you always say.””
Daniel stayed silent.
For once, he looked like he understood that this was between me and my wife.
I placed the phone on the table.
“What happened the night Ethan was born?””
Claire sat down slowly.
Her hands were shaking.
“When I went into labor, Andrew was there.””
I frowned.
“Your brother?””
She nodded.
“He was supposed to drive me to the hospital.””
I waited.
“And?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Something happened.””
“What?””
Her voice became smaller.
“Andrew was being followed.””
The room went silent.
“He came to the hospital because he thought someone was trying to find him.””
I stared at her.
“You never told me that.””
“I was scared.””
“You were always scared.””
My voice broke.
“You were scared when you lied about Daniel. You were scared when you hid Andrew. You were scared when you hid Ethan’s past.””
I looked away.
“How many years was I supposed to spend loving a story that wasn’t true?””
Claire cried.
“I never lied about loving you.””
That sentence hurt because I believed it.
That was the worst part.
I believed her.
She reached for my hand.
“Marcus, everything I did was because I was afraid someone would take Ethan.””
I pulled my hand away.
“Who?””
She looked at the folder.
“Robert.””
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“Robert knew about Andrew.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You never told me that.””
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””
I stared at both of them.
“So Robert has known about Ethan all these years?””
Claire nodded.
“He found out Andrew had a son.””
My stomach tightened.
“And he waited?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke quietly.
“Because Ethan isn’t just Andrew’s son.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel pulled another document from the folder.
“This.””
I took it.
It was an old legal report.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then I stopped.
There was a company name.
A family name.
And suddenly, everything made sense.
“Andrew wasn’t running from Robert.””
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
I looked up.
“He was protecting Ethan from him.””
Claire nodded.
“Robert wanted control of something Andrew had.””
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the document.
“An inheritance.””
I stared.
“What inheritance?””
“A trust fund created by Andrew’s family.””
I looked at the paperwork.
The amount listed made my breath catch.
Millions.
Ethan wasn’t just a child with a hidden past.
He was the key to a fortune.
A fortune someone had been waiting years to claim.
Then we heard a sound.
A crash.
From upstairs.
My heart stopped.
“Ethan?””
I ran toward the stairs.
“Ethan!””
No answer.
I rushed into his room.
The window was open.
The curtains moved in the wind.
My son was gone.
On his bed was a single piece of paper.
I picked it up.
Only six words were written.
*“You should have listened, Marcus.””*
And underneath the message was a name.
May you like
A name I never expected to see.
Robert.
