Chapter 3: The Name on the Paper

My fingers tightened around the document until the edges bent.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

My name was printed clearly on the page.

*Marcus Hale.*

Below it were legal words I barely processed.

Custody.

Guardian.

Inheritance.

Death.

I looked up at Claire.

“What is this?””

Her face had gone completely white.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

My voice came out colder than I expected.

“You don’t get to say my name like that anymore. You’re going to explain.””

Daniel stood silently near the driveway, watching the damage unfold.

I looked at him.

“You knew about this?””

He nodded slowly.

“I did.””

The anger inside me burned hotter.

“So both of you have been keeping secrets from me?””

Daniel looked down.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

I laughed.

“You came to my house in the middle of the night, you’ve been sleeping in my wife’s room, and you’re telling me you weren’t trying to hurt me?””

Claire stepped forward.

“Marcus, stop. You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

The words came out louder than I intended.

The front door behind us opened slightly.

Ethan was standing there.

I immediately stopped.

“Ethan, go back inside.””

He looked at Claire, then at Daniel.

“But Dad—”

“Please.””

Something in my voice made him listen.

The door closed.

I turned back around.

“Talk.””

Claire wiped her face.

“Daniel and I knew each other before you and I met.””

“I heard that part.””

“But you don’t know why.””

She looked at the paper in my hand.

“Daniel was my brother’s best friend.””

I frowned.

“Your brother?””

Claire nodded.

“My older brother, Andrew.””

I felt a strange shift.

Because I had never heard of Andrew.

Not once.

“Claire, you told me you were an only child.””

She looked away.

“I know.””

The silence between us felt endless.

“Why would you lie about having a brother?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because my brother died.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

“Ten years ago.””

The number hit me.

Ten years.

The same year I met her.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Andrew didn’t just die. He left behind someone.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the house.

My stomach tightened.

“Ethan.””

I froze.

The entire world seemed to stop.

“What did you just say?””

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No. Marcus, listen—”

Daniel continued.

“Andrew was Ethan’s biological father.””

I stepped backward.

The words didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t.

“No.””

Claire started crying.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I looked between them.

“No. Ethan is my son.””

Claire nodded quickly.

“He is your son.””

But Daniel’s expression told me there was more.

“He’s your son because you raised him,” Daniel said softly.

“Because you loved him. Because you were the only father he ever knew.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why are we having this conversation?””

Daniel looked at the ground.

“Because Andrew left a legal agreement before he died.””

I looked at the paper again.

The words suddenly felt heavier.

“You knew this entire time?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The betrayal hurt worse than I expected.

Not because Ethan wasn’t my blood.

But because the two people closest to me had decided I didn’t deserve the truth.

“You let me believe something else for eight years.””

“I was scared,” Claire whispered.

“Scared of what?””

She looked at me.

“Losing you.””

I shook my head.

“You should have been scared of losing my trust.””

A cold wind passed through the driveway.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniel spoke.

“There’s another reason I came tonight.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He hesitated.

“Someone else knows about Ethan.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Daniel…”

“What are you talking about?”” I asked.

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“There were people looking for Andrew’s records.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know yet.””

Claire stepped closer.

“But they know about Ethan.””

I looked toward the house.

My son.

The little boy who believed his family was safe.

Suddenly, every strange moment from the past few months came rushing back.

The unknown numbers calling Claire.

The way she would leave the room to answer them.

The nights she seemed worried but refused to explain why.

I had thought she was hiding an affair.

But maybe she was hiding something much bigger.

Daniel looked at me.

“Marcus, you need to hear the rest before you make any decisions.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His face became serious.

“Because Andrew didn’t just leave custody papers.””

He paused.

“He left proof that Ethan was in danger.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of proof?””

Daniel unlocked his phone.

“I have a video.””

Claire immediately grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“He deserves to know.””

Then he pressed play.

The screen showed a dark room.

A man’s voice filled the speakers.

And after eight years of believing I knew everything about my family, I heard a voice that made Claire cover her mouth.

Because it was Andrew.

May you like

And he was saying my name.

“Marcus… if you’re watching this, it means Claire finally told you the truth.””
