Chapter 4: The Secret Andrew Left Behind
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
A dead man was speaking to me through a phone screen.
Daniel held the phone between us while the video continued playing.
The image was blurry, almost like it had been recorded in a hurry. Andrew sat at a small table, his face tired, his eyes carrying a fear I didn’t understand.
But one thing was clear.
He knew I would see this someday.
“Marcus,” Andrew said in the video, “I don’t know what Claire has told you. Maybe she told you everything. Maybe she didn’t.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Andrew continued.
“But if you’re watching this, it means something went wrong.””
I looked at Claire.
“What does he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
The video continued.
“I need you to understand something. Ethan is innocent in all of this. He didn’t choose any of this.””
My hands trembled.
Andrew knew.
He knew I was Ethan’s father in every way that mattered.
Then his expression changed.
More serious.
“Someone is trying to find him.””
The words echoed through the driveway.
I looked at Daniel.
“You said people were looking for him.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I watched the screen.
Andrew leaned closer to the camera.
“Marcus, protect him. Not because of the law. Not because of a piece of paper. Protect him because he is a child who deserves a normal life.””
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the entire argument.
Finally, I turned to Claire.
“How long?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“How long have you known?””
Her lips trembled.
“Known what?””
“That Ethan could be in danger.””
She looked down.
“A few months.””
I felt my anger return.
“A few months?””
“Marcus, I was trying to handle it.””
“You were trying to handle it?””
My voice rose.
“You let me keep living normally while you were hiding something that could hurt our son?””
She flinched.
“I was protecting him.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the house.
“You were protecting a secret.””
Claire started crying.
“I was protecting you too.””
I stared at her.
“From what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“From the truth about Andrew.””
I turned toward him.
“What truth?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Andrew wasn’t just your wife’s brother.””
I waited.
“He was involved with dangerous people.””
The words made my stomach sink.
“What kind of people?””
Daniel looked around the quiet neighborhood.
“People who don’t like loose ends.””
I glanced toward the street.
Every parked car suddenly looked suspicious.
Every shadow felt darker.
I hated that my home no longer felt safe.
The place where Ethan played.
The place where I built memories.
Now it felt like someone had been watching us.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because Claire begged me not to.””
I turned to her.
“You asked him to keep this from me?””
She whispered:
“I thought if you knew everything, you’d leave.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it revealed exactly how little she understood me.
“You thought I would leave my son?””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“You thought I would leave Ethan.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid.””
I walked toward the front door.
I needed to see him.
I needed to make sure he was okay.
But before I reached the steps, my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because they might know we found out.””
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Claire whispered:
“Marcus…”
I answered.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a man’s voice came through.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
“Mr. Hale?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
The man ignored my question.
“You should stop digging into things that don’t belong to you.””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know my name?””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“Because I know your family better than you do.””
I looked at Claire.
She was frozen.
The man continued.
“Tell Daniel he made a mistake coming back.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Then the stranger said one final sentence.
May you like
And it changed everything.
“Your wife was never the only person keeping secrets from you.””
