Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Door

The paper slipped from my hand.

For a moment, my brain refused to accept what my eyes had already seen.

*Robert.*

The same man who had sat across from me in business meetings.

The same man who had congratulated me when Ethan scored his first soccer goal.

The same man who had brought gifts to our house and joked about becoming Ethan’s “favorite uncle.””

He had been close enough to hurt us.

Close enough to know everything.

“Marcus…”

Claire’s voice sounded distant.

I turned around.

“Where is he?””

She looked at the open window.

“I don’t know.””

My anger exploded.

“You don’t know?””

I pointed toward the empty room.

“Our son is gone!””

Claire covered her mouth, crying.

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“No. I’ve been listening for years. I listened to everyone except the person I should have protected.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“This is not your fault.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t say that.””

Because it wasn’t comfort I needed.

It was my son.

I grabbed my phone and called Robert.

The call connected after only one ring.

That was the first thing that scared me.

“Marcus.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Where is Ethan?””

Silence.

Then a small laugh.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to figure it out.””

My entire body went cold.

Claire stepped closer.

“Put it on speaker.””

I did.

Daniel leaned in.

Robert continued.

“You always were a smart man, Marcus. I just never understood why you wasted that intelligence trusting people.””

I gripped the phone.

“If you touch my son—”

“Careful.””

His voice became colder.

“You’re angry. I understand. But anger makes people make mistakes.””

“Where is he?””

Robert sighed.

“You really want to know the truth?””

“I want my son back.””

A pause.

Then Robert said:

“Your son was never supposed to be yours.””

Claire started crying.

“Robert, please.””

He ignored her.

“Andrew ruined everything. He thought he could hide Ethan and make someone else raise him.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re the reason Andrew died.””

The line went silent.

Then Robert laughed.

“You still blame me?””

My eyes moved to Daniel.

He looked like he was barely holding himself together.

Robert continued.

“Andrew made choices. Bad ones.””

“You killed him,” Daniel said.

“No.””

Robert’s voice became sharp.

“Andrew got himself killed.””

The words hung in the room.

I looked at Claire.

She was shaking.

“How do you know all this?””

Robert answered immediately.

“Because I was there.””

The call went silent.

Then I heard something.

A sound in the background.

A child’s voice.

My heart stopped.

“Dad?””

Ethan.

I almost dropped the phone.

“Ethan!””

Robert spoke quickly.

“Don’t worry. He’s safe.””

I closed my eyes.

“Let me talk to him.””

“No.””

“Robert—”

“You need to understand something, Marcus.””

His voice lowered.

“Ethan is valuable.””

My stomach turned.

“He is a child.””

“To you.””

The way he said it made my blood run cold.

“To me, he is the last piece of a puzzle.””

Daniel whispered:

“The trust.””

Robert continued.

“Andrew thought he could lock away his family’s money forever. But he made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He trusted Claire.””

Claire froze.

I looked at her.

Robert laughed quietly.

“She never told you the full story, did she?””

Claire whispered:

“Stop.””

My heart sank.

“What story?””

Nobody answered.

Not even Claire.

I felt something worse than anger.

Betrayal.

Again.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Marcus…”

“Tell me.””

Her lips trembled.

“I didn’t tell you because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

She closed her eyes.

“Ethan wasn’t the only thing Andrew left behind.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, Robert interrupted.

“Enough.””

His voice became impatient.

“Marcus, you want your son back?””

“Yes.””

“Then bring me the original trust documents.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Robert continued.

“The ones Andrew hid before he died.””

I looked at Daniel.

“We don’t have them.””

“You do.””

“No, we don’t.””

Robert laughed.

“You really don’t know.””

A chill moved through me.

“Know what?””

The call became quiet.

Then Robert said:

“Your wife has had them all along.””

I turned toward Claire.

Her face lost all color.

The phone slipped lower in my hand.

Because deep down…

I already knew.

Claire wasn’t just hiding the past.

May you like

She was hiding the final piece of it.

And before I could ask another question, the call ended.
