Chapter 2: The Man at the Door

The sound of the doorbell felt louder than a gunshot.

I stood in the middle of my living room, staring at the entrance of the home where I had raised my son, celebrated birthdays, and believed I was loved.

Behind that door was the person who had been walking into my life without my permission.

Claire rushed toward me.

“Marcus, please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

Her eyes were filled with panic.

“Don’t do anything until you hear me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Hear you?””

My voice shook.

“I’ve been listening for years, Claire. I listened when you said you missed me while I was traveling. I listened when you told me everything was fine.””

She wiped her tears.

“Marcus, there are things you don’t know.””

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang again.

This time, Ethan jumped.

I looked down at my son.

“Ethan, go upstairs for me.””

“But Dad—”

“Now, buddy.””

He slowly walked toward the stairs, still holding the remote-control car.

Halfway up, he stopped.

“Dad?””

I looked at him.

“Is Uncle Daniel in trouble?””

That question hurt more than anything else.

Because Ethan wasn’t asking if I was hurt.

He was asking if the man who had been sneaking into our home was someone worth protecting.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Just go upstairs.””

He nodded and disappeared.

I turned back to Claire.

“Open the door.””

She shook her head.

“Marcus…”

“Open. The door.””

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Fear.

That was when I knew there was more to the story.

I grabbed the handle and opened the door.

Standing there was a man in his late thirties wearing a dark jacket. He looked surprised to see me.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the man looked past me and saw Claire.

“Marcus,” he said quietly.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You know my name.””

He swallowed.

“Of course I do.””

“Then you know exactly who I am.””

The man looked down.

“I know who you think I am.””

I stepped outside.

“No. You’re going to tell me who you are.””

Claire appeared behind me.

“Daniel, you shouldn’t have come.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I had to.””

I turned toward Claire.

“You had to?””

She looked away.

Daniel sighed.

“Marcus, this isn’t what you think.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Another person.

Another excuse.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel looked at me seriously.

“Because the truth is complicated.””

I pointed toward the house.

“My son knows you come here.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Ethan?””

“Yes. Ethan knows you come here when I’m gone.””

Daniel closed his eyes for a second.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I never wanted him to know.””

My anger turned into confusion.

“What does that mean?””

Claire stepped between us.

“Marcus, please. Let me explain.””

I looked at both of them.

“You have one minute.””

The three of us stood in the driveway while the Texas evening wind moved through the trees.

Daniel spoke first.

“Your wife and I…”

He stopped.

I waited.

Then he continued.

“We knew each other before you.””

My expression hardened.

“Before me?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“We grew up together.””

I stared at her.

“You never told me that.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

Daniel looked toward the house.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

The way he said it made my anger pause.

“What?””

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded envelope.

My eyes went to the paper.

“What is that?””

He handed it to me.

“Something Claire should have given you a long time ago.””

I opened it.

Inside was a document with my name written across the top.

But before I could read the first sentence, Claire grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, don’t.””

I looked at her.

For the first time in our marriage, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Desperation.

I looked back down at the paper.

And then I saw the date.

It was dated three months before I had ever met Claire.

But my name was already on it.

May you like

And underneath my name was a sentence that made my hands start shaking.

*“In the event of my death, custody of Ethan will be transferred to…”*
