Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Buried
The birth certificate slipped from my fingers.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words in front of me.
I read the name again.
And again.
Hoping it would change.
Hoping my eyes had simply misunderstood.
But the name remained.
*Thomas Bennett.*
My father.
The man who had raised me.
The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.
The man who held my hand when I was afraid of thunderstorms.
The man who died three years ago.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Everyone looked at me.
“That’s impossible.””
Margaret looked heartbroken.
“I’m sorry, Emma.””
I shook my head.
“My father never knew the Vale family.””
But even as I said it, memories began returning.
Small moments.
Things I had ignored.
My father refusing to attend any Vale family events.
The way he changed the subject whenever Alexander’s last name came up.
The old argument I once overheard between him and my mother.
The words I never understood.
“You don’t know what that family is capable of.””
I thought he was being protective.
I thought he was just suspicious of wealthy people.
I never imagined he was hiding a child.
Alexander stared at the document.
His expression was impossible to read.
“My father knew Thomas.””
Lena looked at him.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“No. Not this.””
His voice was quiet.
“But I knew my father hated him.””
I looked at Alexander.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because Thomas was the only person who could expose him.””
The room became silent.
Margaret sat down.
“Your father and Richard Vale were partners once.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Before the company became famous, before the money, before the reputation. They built everything together.””
I stared at the birth certificate.
“But Hope…”
Margaret looked at Lena.
“She was born during the time when everything started falling apart.””
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t understand.””
Alexander picked up the document.
“Neither do I.””
Then his phone rang.
Claire.
Everyone froze.
He answered immediately.
Her face appeared.
This time, she wasn’t smiling.
She looked tired.
“Listen carefully.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“Where is Hope?””
“Safe.””
“Bring her back.””
Claire looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
Her voice softened.
“You think this is about a child.””
She shook her head.
“It’s about the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“Why is my father listed as Hope’s father?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because he was.””
My heart broke all over again.
“How?””
She sighed.
“Your father and Lena knew each other before Daniel.””
Lena looked shocked.
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Lena covered her mouth.
“He never told me.””
“Because he wanted to protect you.””
I felt dizzy.
My father.
Lena.
Hope.
A whole part of my life had existed before I ever knew about it.
Claire continued.
“When Richard discovered Thomas was involved, he panicked.””
Alexander’s face changed.
“What did he do?””
Claire looked away.
“He made sure Thomas disappeared from Lena’s life.””
I whispered:
“My father left?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
A painful silence followed.
“He was forced away.””
I closed my eyes.
The man I thought I knew suddenly had an entire hidden history.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Richard threatened you.””
The answer felt familiar.
Another threat.
Another person silenced by fear.
I looked at Alexander.
He understood.
His father had controlled everyone.
Not just him.
Not just Lena.
Everyone.
Claire continued.
“Thomas found out Richard was planning to erase Hope’s identity. He tried to take her and run.””
“And?””
“He failed.””
Lena’s voice trembled.
“What happened to him?””
Claire didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
My father’s death suddenly felt different.
The official story.
The accident.
The timing.
Everything.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“No.””
Alexander stepped toward me.
“Emma.””
I pushed him away.
“My entire life has been built on things people hid from me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire said:
“Emma, there is one more thing you need to know.””
I looked at the phone.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“The reason Richard wanted Hope gone wasn’t because of the company.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
Claire looked directly at me.
“Because Hope inherited something Richard spent his entire life trying to control.””
The call ended.
Seconds later, a message appeared.
A location.
May you like
And one final sentence.
*Come alone if you want the full truth.*
