Chapter 8: The Father Who Never Knew

The photograph haunted me.

Not because Hope was in danger.

Because she looked happy.

She was smiling.

A child’s innocent smile.

She had no idea that three adults were staring at her picture, realizing their entire understanding of the past had been wrong.

Alexander sat in silence.

I had never seen him like that.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Not untouchable.

Just a man staring at the face of a daughter he never knew existed.

Lena walked away from him.

“You knew something was wrong.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You knew Daniel wasn’t the father?””

Alexander looked up.

“No.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Then why does she have your eyes?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I watched him carefully.

Six years ago, he had lost his brother.

Lost a child he never knew was his.

And allowed an innocent woman to suffer.

But there was still one question I couldn’t ignore.

“Why did you never tell me?””

Alexander looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I spent years believing I was protecting everyone. But the truth is, I was protecting myself.””

He stood.

“When Daniel died, I was scared. My father told me the family would collapse if the truth came out.””

“So you stayed quiet.””

“Yes.””

“Even when Lena went to prison.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

The word was painful.

“But I tried to fix it.””

Lena looked at him.

“You don’t fix six years.””

“No,” he said softly.

“You don’t.””

For once, nobody argued.

Because he was right.

A mistake could be explained.

A choice could not.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A video call.

Unknown number.

Everyone became alert.

I answered.

Claire appeared on the screen.

She was sitting beside Hope.

The little girl looked at the camera curiously.

“Who are they?”” Hope asked.

Claire smiled.

“People from your past.””

Lena stepped closer.

“Hope?””

The little girl froze.

Her eyes widened.

“Mom?””

Lena covered her mouth.

A sound escaped her.

A broken, beautiful sound.

“My baby.””

Hope smiled.

“Are you really my mommy?””

Lena began crying.

“Yes.””

Claire watched them.

Almost proudly.

“You see? I gave her something you never could.””

Lena’s face changed.

“You stole my daughter.””

“No,” Claire replied.

“I saved her.””

I stepped closer.

“Why are you doing this?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because everyone thinks Richard Vale was the monster.””

She smiled.

“But he wasn’t the only one.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire turned toward him.

“Your father told you he controlled everything.””

She laughed softly.

“He loved making you believe you were powerless.””

Alexander went still.

Claire continued.

“But there was one thing Richard never knew.””

The screen flickered.

“He wasn’t Hope’s father.””

Everyone looked at Alexander.

Claire smiled.

“Neither was Daniel.””

The words landed like a bomb.

Lena shook her head.

“You’re lying.””

Claire held up a document.

“A DNA test.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the same place your father hid everything.””

She leaned closer.

“Your family built their empire on secrets.””

The little girl beside her looked confused.

“Claire, why are they sad?””

Claire touched her shoulder.

“Because some truths hurt.””

I hated hearing those words from her.

Because she was right.

The truth did hurt.

But lies destroyed.

Claire looked directly at me.

“Emma, you’re the only person who can decide what happens next.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled.

“Because Hope’s real father is not Alexander.””

The call went silent.

Then Claire said the one thing I never expected.

“Hope’s father is someone you already know.””

The screen went black.

At that exact moment, Margaret ran into the room holding another file.

Her face was terrified.

“I found the original birth record.””

Everyone turned.

She placed it on the table.

“There’s a name on it.””

My eyes dropped to the paper.

And when I read it, I felt the world tilt beneath my feet.

Because the father listed on Hope’s birth certificate was not Alexander.

May you like

Not Daniel.

It was my own father.
