Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Floor

I didn’t walk down the aisle that day.

I didn’t say my vows.

I didn’t smile for photographs while everyone pretended nothing had happened.

The wedding ended before it ever began.

Within ten minutes, the ballroom that had looked like a dream became a room full of strangers watching my life fall apart.

Alexander followed me into the private bridal suite.

“Emma, please,” he said.

I stood near the window, still holding the paper the woman had thrown at me.

My hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He was silent.

That was the worst possible answer.

“Alexander.””

He stepped closer.

“She’s dangerous.””

I turned around.

“That’s not what I asked.””

His jaw tightened.

I had never seen him look so uncomfortable.

“What happened?”” I demanded.

He looked away.

“I can explain.””

“No,” I said.

“You can tell me the truth.””

He ran his fingers through his hair.

“Emma, some things from my past are complicated.””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“A woman escaped prison and crashed our wedding because of you. That’s not complicated. That’s a nightmare.””

He looked hurt.

But I no longer knew if his pain was real.

Before he could answer, someone knocked on the door.

Sarah entered without waiting.

“Emma.””

Her face was pale.

“There’s something you need to see.””

Alexander immediately stepped forward.

“Sarah, this doesn’t involve you.””

She glared at him.

“Actually, I think it involves her more than anyone.””

She handed me her phone.

On the screen was a news article from six years earlier.

The headline made my chest tighten.

*Business Heir Alexander Vale Named In Investigation Surrounding Missing Infant Case.*

I stared at the words.

“No,” I whispered.

Sarah looked at Alexander.

“You told her you never had anything to hide.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“Get out.””

Sarah didn’t move.

“Tell her what happened.””

I looked between them.

“What happened six years ago?””

Alexander lowered his voice.

“Emma, that article is exaggerated.””

“Then explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The silence answered for him.

That evening, I drove alone to Alexander’s family mansion.

I didn’t know what I expected to find.

Maybe another lie.

Maybe proof that everything was a misunderstanding.

Maybe a reason to forgive him.

But when I entered the old house, I found something else.

The white chest from the wedding was already there.

Waiting.

I froze in the doorway.

“How did this get here?””

No one answered.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Collins, stood near the staircase.

She looked terrified.

“Mrs. Vale—”

“I’m not Mrs. Vale,” I interrupted.

She lowered her eyes.

“Not yet.””

I walked toward the chest.

The same silver lock stared back at me.

The same carvings covered the wood.

Except now I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.

A small symbol carved into the corner.

A symbol that matched the necklace Alexander had given me on our first anniversary.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

Mrs. Collins began crying.

“Please don’t open it.””

I turned.

“Why?””

She looked toward the empty hallway.

“Because Mr. Vale told us nobody was ever supposed to find out.””

My heart raced.

“Find out what?””

She stepped closer.

“Six years ago, there was a baby.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“A baby belonging to who?””

She swallowed.

“Alexander.””

I felt the air disappear from my lungs.

“That’s impossible.””

Mrs. Collins shook her head.

“The woman at the wedding was the baby’s mother.””

My fingers tightened around the lock.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped backward.

“That woman said her daughter disappeared.””

Mrs. Collins nodded slowly.

“She didn’t disappear.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“Then where is she?””

Before Mrs. Collins could answer, the front door slammed open.

Alexander’s voice echoed through the mansion.

“Emma?””

I turned around.

He stood there, breathing heavily.

He looked from me to the chest.

Then he knew.

He knew I had discovered something.

His face changed.

Not fear this time.

Desperation.

“Don’t open that,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He walked toward me slowly.

“Because once you see what’s inside, you’ll never look at me the same way again.””

My hand moved toward the lock.

And from behind Alexander, a familiar voice whispered:

May you like

“She deserves to know the truth.””

The woman in the prison uniform stepped out of the shadows.
