Chapter 6: The Letter From The Dead
I didn’t want to open the envelope.
That was the truth.
Because some part of me knew that once I read Daniel’s words, there would be no way to return to the life I had before.
The woman who walked into my wedding had broken the illusion.
The letter would destroy whatever was left.
But I opened it anyway.
The paper inside was old.
Folded carefully.
Protected for years.
The handwriting was uneven, rushed.
Like someone writing while running out of time.
I read the first line.
*Emma, if you are reading this, then Alexander finally found the courage to tell you.*
My eyes lifted.
Alexander looked down.
Lena covered her mouth.
I continued.
*You don’t know me, but I know you. My brother talks about you more than he realizes. He says you make him want to become someone better.*
My throat tightened.
I looked at Alexander.
He looked away.
**That is why I need you to know the truth. Alexander is not the person everyone thinks he is. He made mistakes.
Terrible mistakes. But he is not the reason I’m gone.**
I stopped reading.
“What does this mean?””
Alexander whispered:
“Keep going.””
I continued.
*Our father knew about the company investigation. He knew I had proof. He knew I would never stay quiet.*
My fingers trembled.
*The night before the accident, Alexander came to my house. He begged me to leave the evidence alone. We fought. I told him I would rather lose everything than let our family keep hurting people.*
The room was completely silent.
*But after he left, Father came.*
I looked at Alexander.
His face had gone pale.
*Emma, the person you should fear is not the brother who was too weak to fight. It is the father who taught him weakness was survival.*
I stopped.
“What happened to Daniel?””
Alexander answered quietly.
“He died trying to expose my father.””
Lena looked at him.
“Then why did you let me go to prison?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“Because my father threatened you.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would make sure Hope disappeared forever.””
The air left the room.
“You knew she was alive.””
Alexander nodded.
“I found out after Daniel died.””
“Where was she?””
“My father gave her to someone he trusted.””
Lena stood.
“Who?””
Alexander looked at her.
“A woman named Claire Whitmore.””
Lena froze.
“No.””
“You know her?””
Lena’s face became pale.
“She worked for your father.””
Alexander nodded.
“She was the one who raised Hope.””
I looked at the photograph again.
The little girl.
The missing child.
The secret everyone had buried.
“Where is she now?”” I asked.
Alexander looked at the window.
“She’s gone.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“She disappeared yesterday.””
Lena grabbed the table.
“No.””
Alexander pulled out his phone.
“There’s more.””
He showed us another message.
The same unknown number.
This time, there was a video attached.
We watched.
A small room appeared on the screen.
A child’s bedroom.
Then a voice spoke.
A woman’s voice.
“Alexander Vale.””
Everyone froze.
The camera moved.
A woman stepped into view.
Older.
Cold.
Confident.
Claire Whitmore.
She smiled directly at the camera.
“You spent six years pretending you were protecting that child.””
She leaned closer.
“But you never understood the truth.””
The video glitched.
Before it ended, Claire whispered:
“Hope was never the secret.””
The screen went black.
May you like
Then one final message appeared.
*The secret was who her real father is.*
