Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Records

The message stayed on the screen long after the video ended.

*The secret was who her real father is.*

Nobody spoke.

The café around us continued moving.

People laughed at nearby tables. Cups clinked against saucers. A waiter walked past carrying a tray of coffee.

But our world had stopped.

Lena was the first to react.

“No.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Alexander stared at the blank screen.

His hands were trembling.

“Claire is lying.””

I looked at him.

“You sound like you’re trying to convince yourself.””

His eyes met mine.

“Emma, I know what happened.””

“Do you?””

The question hit him harder than I expected.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t angry.

I was afraid.

There was a little girl somewhere who had spent her entire life surrounded by secrets.

And every adult who claimed to protect her had failed.

Lena stood abruptly.

“I’m going to find my daughter.””

Alexander grabbed his phone.

“I’ll track the location.””

She looked at him with disgust.

“You don’t get to be her hero now.””

His expression broke.

“I know.””

That answer surprised all of us.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

He simply accepted it.

The next morning, we went back to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Margaret had agreed to help us search through old records.

She led us into a storage room beneath the hospital.

The air smelled like dust and old paper.

“These records should have been destroyed years ago,” she said.

“But you kept them.””

She looked at me.

“Some truths are worth protecting.””

For hours, we searched.

Birth records.

Transfer documents.

Medical reports.

Every piece of Hope’s life had been hidden behind layers of lies.

Then Margaret suddenly stopped.

Her hand froze over a folder.

“I remember this.””

Alexander walked toward her.

“What?””

She opened it slowly.

Inside was a document with several signatures.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

There was one name I recognized.

Not because I had seen it before.

Because I had heard Alexander say it.

His father.

Richard Vale.

The signature was dated six years earlier.

The same day Hope disappeared.

Lena took the paper.

“He arranged the transfer.””

Margaret nodded.

“But look at the bottom.””

Lena’s eyes moved.

Then widened.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

There was another signature.

A witness signature.

A name written in black ink.

Alexander Vale.

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

“No.””

He stared at the paper.

His face went completely blank.

“I never signed this.””

Margaret looked confused.

“Then someone forged your signature.””

Alexander grabbed the document.

“Where did this come from?””

“I found it hidden behind another file.””

He looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

That was the moment I realized something.

Someone had been using Alexander’s name.

Someone had been building a story where he became the villain.

But why?

Before we could answer, Margaret found another envelope attached to the file.

“This was inside.””

She handed it to me.

The envelope had no name.

Only one sentence.

*For the woman Alexander Vale will someday love.*

My heart stopped.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

But it wasn’t from Daniel.

It was from Richard Vale.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*If you are reading this, then my son has finally failed to protect my secret.*

I looked at Alexander.

“What secret?””

He didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

*Alexander always believed he was cleaning up my mistakes. He never understood that he was my greatest mistake.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*Daniel was not the only son who discovered the truth.*

I looked up.

Alexander’s face had gone pale.

“Keep reading,” he whispered.

I continued.

*The child named Hope Hart was never supposed to exist. Because the moment she was born, everything I built was at risk.*

Lena stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

I read the next sentence.

And every person in that room froze.

*Hope is not Daniel’s daughter.*

The words blurred.

“No.””

Lena shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

But the letter continued.

*She is Alexander’s daughter.*

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

I looked at Alexander.

He looked like the world had collapsed beneath him.

“No,” he whispered.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

A new message.

From Claire.

He opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Hope was sitting on a chair.

Alive.

Safe.

But beside her stood Claire.

Holding a document.

May you like

The message underneath said:

*Now you know why I took her.*
