Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Lie

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The woman from my wedding stood in the doorway of Alexander’s mansion like a ghost that had returned to collect a debt.

Her orange prison uniform was wrinkled. Her eyes were exhausted. But there was something different about her now.

She wasn’t desperate anymore.

She looked determined.

Alexander’s face turned pale.

“Lena.””

The name left his mouth like a confession.

I looked at him.

“You know her.””

He didn’t answer.

That was all the answer I needed.

Lena stepped into the room.

“Of course he knows me,” she said quietly.

“He made sure I was never allowed near you.””

Alexander’s voice became sharp.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You still think you can control everything.””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Neither of them spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, Lena looked at me.

“My name is Lena Hart. Six years ago, I worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital.””

She glanced at Alexander.

“And I was engaged to this man’s younger brother.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“His brother?””

Alexander looked away.

I had heard stories about his family.

A wealthy family with a beautiful mansion and a complicated history.

But Alexander had never mentioned a younger brother.

Not once.

“Who was his brother?”” I asked.

Lena’s eyes filled with pain.

“Daniel.””

The name felt strangely familiar.

Then I remembered.

An old photograph in Alexander’s study.

A young man standing beside him.

Same dark hair.

Same eyes.

But while Alexander always looked controlled, the man in the picture had a warm smile.

“Daniel died,” I whispered.

Lena nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became colder.

“How?””

She stared at Alexander.

“That’s the question nobody wanted answered.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No,” Lena snapped.

“She deserves the truth.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know Daniel?””

His expression tightened.

“Of course I knew him. He was my brother.””

“Then why did you never tell me?””

“Because it’s painful.””

Lena shook her head.

“No. Because it’s dangerous.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What happened to Daniel?””

Lena walked toward the chest.

“Everything inside that box explains it.””

Alexander moved immediately.

“Don’t touch it.””

She smiled sadly.

“You’re still afraid of what’s inside.””

I looked at the lock.

A simple piece of metal.

Yet everyone in this room was terrified of it.

“What’s the key?”” I asked.

Alexander froze.

Lena looked at me.

“You have it.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She pointed at my necklace.

The necklace Alexander had given me.

My fingers touched the small silver pendant hanging around my neck.

“No.””

Lena nodded.

“Look closer.””

I removed it.

For the first time, I noticed the pendant wasn’t just a decoration.

The back had a tiny opening.

A small piece of metal was hidden inside.

My hands went cold.

“Alexander gave me this.””

Lena’s eyes hardened.

“Exactly.””

I turned toward him.

“What did you give me?””

He didn’t respond.

I walked closer to the chest.

Alexander grabbed my wrist.

“Emma, please.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

The words seemed to hurt him.

Good.

Because I was hurting too.

I inserted the hidden key into the lock.

It fit perfectly.

The sound of the lock opening echoed through the room.

Click.

Everyone held their breath.

I lifted the lid.

Inside was not money.

Not jewelry.

Not anything valuable.

There were documents.

Photographs.

A small baby blanket.

And a hospital bracelet.

My fingers trembled as I picked it up.

The name written on it made my entire body freeze.

*Baby Hope Hart.*

I looked at Lena.

Her face broke.

“That’s my daughter.””

I looked back at Alexander.

“No.””

He closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“You told me you never wanted children because you weren’t ready.””

His silence continued.

“But there was a baby.””

Lena wiped her tears.

“A baby Alexander tried to erase.””

Alexander suddenly shouted.

“That’s not what happened!””

His voice shook the entire room.

Everyone went silent.

For the first time, I saw something behind his perfect image.

Panic.

Real panic.

“What happened then?”” I asked.

Alexander looked at the documents inside the chest.

Then at me.

Then he whispered:

“Daniel was the father.””

My heart stopped.

“And you?””

May you like

He swallowed.

“I was the reason he died.””
