Chapter 1: The Locked Chest
“Open it before it’s too late!””
Those were the first words I heard from the woman who destroyed my perfect wedding.
I thought the biggest disaster of my life would be a broken heel, a spilled glass of champagne, or a forgotten wedding vow. I never imagined a woman in a prison uniform would run through the doors of my ceremony and make my future husband look like a man seeing a ghost.
The ballroom had been designed to look like a fairy tale.
White roses covered every table. Hundreds of candles flickered beneath crystal chandeliers. A string quartet played softly as my guests whispered about how beautiful everything was.
I stood at the altar wearing the dress I had dreamed about since I was a little girl.
Across from me was Alexander Vale.
My fiancé.
The man everyone admired.
The man who had built a successful company before turning thirty. The man who held my hand when my father passed away. The man who promised me that I was the only person in the world who truly understood him.
He looked perfect in his black tuxedo.
But five minutes later, I would realize I had never truly known him.
The doors at the back of the ballroom exploded open.
A loud crash echoed through the room.
The music stopped.
Every head turned.
A woman in an orange prison uniform stood there, breathing heavily. Her hair was messy, her face was pale, and there were tears running down her cheeks.
For one frozen second, nobody moved.
Then people started screaming.
“What is happening?”” my mother whispered.
“Someone call security!”” a guest shouted.
Two guards rushed toward the woman, but she pushed past them with surprising strength.
She wasn’t looking at me.
She wasn’t looking at the crowd.
She was staring at the massive white chest placed beside the altar.
I had seen that chest earlier that morning.
Alexander had told me it was an old family heirloom. He said it was just decoration, something his grandmother had left behind.
It was covered in carved patterns and sealed with a heavy silver lock.
I never questioned it.
I never thought I needed to.
The woman dropped to her knees in front of it.
Her hands shook as she grabbed the lock.
“No,” I whispered.
The guards grabbed her shoulders.
“Ma’am, step away from the chest,” one of them ordered.
She screamed and fought against them.
“Let me open it!””
The entire room fell silent.
She pressed her fingers against the lock as if she could break it apart with her bare hands.
“Please,” she cried.
“Please, you don’t understand.””
I looked at Alexander.
And that was when my entire world shifted.
His face was no longer calm.
No longer confident.
Every trace of color had disappeared.
He looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“Alexander?”” I said quietly.
He didn’t answer.
The woman noticed him.
Slowly, she lifted her head.
Their eyes met.
The hatred in her expression was so intense that even the guests around her stepped back.
“You,” she whispered.
Alexander took one step backward.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The woman laughed bitterly.
“You don’t even know?””
My stomach tightened.
Alexander finally spoke.
“Get her out of here.””
His voice was cold, but I noticed his hands were shaking.
The woman pointed at him.
“You lied to her.””
The room erupted with whispers.
“What is she talking about?”” someone asked.
I turned toward Alexander.
“What does she mean?””
He grabbed my arm gently.
“Emma, don’t listen to her. She’s unstable.””
The woman’s face twisted with anger.
“Unstable?””
She pulled against the guards.
“I spent six years in prison because of him!””
A wave of shock moved through the ballroom.
My heart pounded.
“That’s impossible,” I said.
Alexander immediately answered.
“She’s trying to ruin us.””
The woman looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Emma, listen to me. That chest is not a decoration.””
She slammed her fist against the white wood.
“It contains proof.””
The room became silent again.
Proof of what?
I wanted to ask.
But before I could speak, Alexander stepped forward.
“Take her away.””
The guards tightened their grip.
The woman screamed.
“Open the chest, Emma! Look inside before you marry the man who destroyed my life!””
My guests stared at me.
My mother covered her mouth.
My best friend Sarah whispered my name.
I looked back at Alexander.
The man I was supposed to marry in front of everyone.
The man who had always told me there were no secrets between us.
“Alexander,” I said, barely able to breathe.
“What is inside that chest?””
For a moment, he said nothing.
And that silence scared me more than any answer could have.
Then the woman smiled sadly.
“Ask him why my daughter disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
“Daughter?”” I repeated.
Alexander’s eyes widened.
The woman reached into the pocket of her prison uniform and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper.
The guards dragged her toward the doors.
She threw the paper toward me.
It landed at my feet.
I picked it up.
There was only one sentence written on it.
And beneath the words was a name I recognized.
May you like
A name that changed everything.
*The child you buried was never dead.*
