Chapter 5: The Ring Was a Trap
The room felt smaller.
Even with two hundred people surrounding me, I felt like there was no air left.
The Matriarch Ring.
The entire disaster had started because of that ring.
A missing family heirloom.
A public accusation.
A torn dress.
A destroyed marriage.
But now my father was saying the ring was never the real crime.
It was a cover.
“What evidence?”” I asked.
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Eleanor.
“Would you like to tell her?””
For the first time that night, Eleanor had no insult ready.
No clever remark.
No cruel smile.
She looked trapped.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
My father nodded.
“That’s what people say when they’re hoping nobody checks.””
He motioned toward his assistant.
The woman connected another file to the screen.
A photograph appeared.
The ring.
But something was different.
The inside of the ring had been opened.
Guests whispered.
“What is that?””
My father answered.
“A storage compartment.””
My eyes narrowed.
“A ring has a storage compartment?””
“This one does.””
He looked at Chloe.
“Your family has used that ring for decades.””
Chloe crossed her arms.
“So?””
“So your grandmother modified it.””
The screen showed a tiny device.
“A hidden microchip.””
The room erupted with whispers.
I stared at the image.
“What was on it?””
My father looked at me.
“Financial records.””
I felt my heartbeat change.
“What kind of records?””
“The kind showing illegal transfers from several family accounts.””
Eleanor immediately stepped forward.
“That is impossible.””
My father looked at her.
“Then why did you remove the chip before accusing my daughter?””
Silence.
I looked at Chloe.
She looked terrified.
“You knew?””
I asked her.
She didn’t answer.
“Chloe.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen from her.
Guilt.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I almost laughed.
“You didn’t know everything?””
My voice shook.
“You destroyed my dress. You accused me of theft. You humiliated me in front of everyone.””
She looked away.
“I thought you had it.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Because Daniel told me.””
The room froze.
I turned.
Slowly.
Toward my husband.
Daniel’s face collapsed.
“No.””
Chloe looked at him.
“You said she would have the ring.””
My stomach dropped.
“Daniel?””
He shook his head.
“Vivienne, listen—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Again?””
My voice became sharper.
“Again you want me to listen after everyone else speaks?””
Daniel looked desperate.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“You told your sister to search me.””
“I thought the ring was important.””
“You thought humiliating your pregnant wife was acceptable?””
He had no answer.
My father’s assistant spoke quietly.
“Mr. Vale.””
Everyone looked over.
She held another document.
“We found the original transaction.””
My father took it.
He read silently.
Then his expression hardened.
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
My father walked closer.
“You didn’t just attempt to take Vivienne’s shares.””
Daniel said nothing.
“You attempted to transfer them to a company created by you.””
The room exploded.
Guests began whispering loudly.
“A shell company?””
“He planned this?””
Daniel’s face turned red.
“You don’t understand business.””
My father laughed once.
A cold sound.
“No.””
He looked directly at him.
“I understand criminals pretending to be businessmen.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You can’t prove intent.””
My father smiled.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
He lifted the document.
“Because your mistake was believing Vivienne had no idea what she owned.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
My father looked at me sadly.
“Your mother left you something before she died.””
My breath stopped.
My mother.
A woman I barely remembered.
A woman who passed away when I was young.
“What?””
My father’s voice softened.
“She left you control of the family trust.””
The room disappeared.
“I never told you because I wanted you to have a normal life.””
I stared at him.
“Dad…”
“You were never powerless, Vivienne.””
The words broke something inside me.
Because all this time, I thought I had been fighting for a place in Daniel’s world.
I never realized I had my own.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
His face was pale.
“You can’t do this.””
My father raised an eyebrow.
“Do what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Take everything away from me.””
I stared at him.
Everything.
That word.
It was always about what he could lose.
Never what I had lost.
Then my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then he looked directly at Daniel.
“You’re too late.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
My father ended the call.
Then he spoke.
“The police just found the missing ring.””
Nobody moved.
Chloe whispered:
“Where?””
My father looked at her.
“In your apartment.””
Her face drained.
But then my father added one more sentence.
“And they found something else hidden beside it.””
I felt a strange fear.
“What else?””
My father looked at me.
“A second ring.””
I frowned.
“Second ring?””
May you like
He nodded.
“And this one has your name engraved inside.””
