Chapter 2: The Family They Never Knew

The sound of the ballroom doors locking was almost impossible to hear.

Almost.

But everyone noticed.

One by one, guests turned toward the exits.

A wealthy businessman tried pushing the nearest door.

It didn’t move.

“What’s going on?”” he demanded.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Except me.

My father had always been a man people underestimated.

That was their first mistake.

I watched Daniel walk toward me slowly.

“Vivienne,” he said.

“What did you do?””

I laughed softly.

It was strange.

After everything that had happened, that was the first thing he asked.

Not “Are you okay?””

Not “Are you hurt?””

Not “I’m sorry.””

What did you do?

“I called my father.””

Daniel glanced around nervously.

“Your father?””

The question almost made me smile.

Because Daniel had never really known me.

He knew the version of me that cooked dinner.

The version that apologized first.

The version that stayed quiet when his mother insulted my background.

He didn’t know where I came from.

He didn’t know what my last name meant before I married him.

I had hidden it because I wanted a normal life.

I wanted to be loved for myself.

Not my family.

Not my money.

Not my father’s reputation.

But tonight, they forced me to stop hiding.

Chloe stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

She crossed her arms.

“You think calling your rich daddy will scare us?””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“But it should.””

Eleanor scoffed.

“Enough drama.””

Then the main ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark suit entered.

Not a waiter.

Not security.

Someone older.

Someone powerful.

Behind him came several people carrying briefcases.

My father.

Jonathan Vale.

The entire atmosphere changed.

I watched recognition spread across the faces of the older guests.

A woman near the bar whispered his name.

“Jonathan Vale?””

Another guest immediately stood straighter.

The Whitmores had money.

Everyone knew that.

But my father had influence.

There was a difference.

My father walked toward me first.

Not Chloe.

Not Eleanor.

Me.

His eyes fell on my torn dress.

Then my stomach.

Then my face.

And the expression he wore made the entire room colder.

“Who did this?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked at Daniel.

“Was it you?””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

My father studied him.

“Then why did you allow it?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered everything.

My father gently placed his jacket around my shoulders.

“You should have called me sooner.””

I looked down.

“I thought I could handle it.””

His expression softened for a moment.

“My daughter.””

Then it disappeared.

“But they mistook your kindness for weakness.””

Eleanor finally recovered.

She stepped forward.

“This is a family misunderstanding.””

My father turned toward her.

“A family misunderstanding?””

His eyes moved to the torn fabric.

“To humiliate a pregnant woman in front of two hundred people?””

Nobody spoke.

Chloe lifted her chin.

“She stole my ring.””

My father looked at her.

“Interesting.””

He nodded toward one of the people behind him.

A woman opened a laptop.

“We already reviewed the security footage.””

Chloe froze.

The room changed instantly.

“What?”” she said.

My father looked at me.

“I knew you would not ask me to come unless something serious happened.””

The woman connected the laptop to the ballroom screen.

Everyone watched.

The footage appeared.

A camera angle from near the bridal suite.

The guests became silent.

On the screen, Chloe entered the room alone.

Five minutes later, she came back out.

Without the ring.

Then another clip showed something worse.

Eleanor entering.

Taking something from a small jewelry box.

My chest tightened.

I wasn’t shocked.

Not completely.

Somewhere deep down, I had always known they were capable of cruelty.

But seeing it?

Seeing proof?

That was different.

Chloe’s face turned pale.

“That video is fake.””

My father didn’t even blink.

“No.””

He looked toward her.

“But your accusation was.””

The guests began whispering.

The same people who watched me suffer were now watching Chloe fall.

Daniel looked devastated.

He turned to his sister.

“You lied?””

Chloe snapped.

“Don’t act innocent!””

Daniel flinched.

“You dragged her into this.””

“She was always a problem!””

My father raised one hand.

The room went quiet.

“I am not finished.””

He looked toward the screen.

Then toward Eleanor.

“There is another recording.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

For the first time all night, she looked uncertain.

My father continued.

“The one from three months ago.””

My heart stopped.

Three months ago?

What recording?

He looked at me.

And I realized something.

My father knew more than I did.

“What are you talking about?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he turned to the screen.

The next file appeared.

A conversation.

A conversation I had never heard.

And the first voice that came from the speakers was Daniel’s.

“Once the baby is born, Vivienne won’t be useful anymore.””

My entire body went cold.

The room disappeared.

The guests disappeared.

All I could hear was my husband’s voice.

My husband.

The man I had defended.

The man I loved.

“I’ll handle the divorce.””

A painful silence filled the ballroom.

Then Daniel whispered behind me.

“Vivienne…”

I couldn’t turn around.

Because I already knew.

The worst betrayal wasn’t that they had torn my dress.

It was that the person I expected to save me had been planning my destruction long before tonight.

But then the recording continued.

And another voice spoke.

A voice that revealed something even more shocking.

Because it wasn’t Eleanor.

May you like

It wasn’t Chloe.

It was someone I never expected.
